A Living Martyr

In 1980, two brothers, Haidar (4 years old) and Ahmed (2 years old), were separated in a Baghdad jail cell. Amazingly, four decades later, in Baghdad, they meet again: After coming to power in 1979, the brutal dictator Saddam Hussein consolidated power by targeting any potential opposition. By the 1980s, Saddam’s thugs were rounding up people by the thousands on the mere suspicion of being in the then outlawed Dawa or Communist Parties.

As the country whose supply is set to decline the most of all OPEC producers (year-over-year) because of the cuts that were implemented to stabilise the oil market, Iraq should have had a say in these discussions.

- the Ministry of Health has been extremely transparent by publishing daily COVID-19 updates detailing total infected, healed & deceased
- the licence suspension came from the National Communications and Media Commission of Iraq, an independent body that’s not tied to the executive branch of govt. So you’re technically right when you say “the govt” but for the sake of clarity let’s ensure this distinction is understood

On 15/3 the @IraqiGovt announced a curfew from 17/3 - 24/3.

On 22/3 the govt extended the curfew to 28/3.

Expect an extension of the curfew to be announced before the 28th, likely for another week.

In choosing to resign, @AdilAbdAlMahdi has written the Parliament to advise them of his resignation rather than write President @BarhamSalih, a path which the constitution clearly draws for him. In accepting @AdilAbdAlMahdi’s resignation, Speaker Halbousi doesn’t hold a vote of no-confidence but simply asks if anyone objects. The silence is taken as acceptance.

Experience. As an economist formerly in the PMO’s Economic Reform Unit, my main project 12/2016-6/2017 was the WB’s DB report indicators & working w/ @IraqiGovt institutions to reform in order to become more efficient which would positively impact Iraq’s DB rankings. (1/4) We focused on 5 out of the 10 indicators so we didn’t bite off more than we can chew. We helped exact some change. When the 2018 report came out late 10/2017 I was shocked to see that although we had improved in 6 out of 10 indicators, stayed constant in 1 & went... (2/4)
