A few observations about advocating for common sense gun policy as a term limited state senator of eight years and a gun owner in Nebraska. A thread 🧵 It doesn't matter if there is bi-partisan consensus on the reform that you are trying to achieve whether it be background checks or red flag laws (something Trump recommended), they will go after the policy and you. omaha.com/state-and-regi…

In the Department of Corrections staffing listening session being hosted by the Judiciary Committee. The results of over crowding and lack of funding. #Neleg #Nebraska Staff are testifying that inmates are essentially on perpetual lock down due to a lack of staff. Staff are being required to work essentially 17 hour days, and insist that the security and safety situation is "critical."

Next legislative session I am going to bring legislation replacing our current state flag and seal with our legislative seal. This will solve the question of “if not the current flag and sea, then what?” The seal or a variation of it is already carved into several parts of the Capitol.

One day progressives on the national level are going to need wake up and realize they can't keep ignoring investing in long term organizing and infrastructure building in midwestern states. Nebraska has two senate seats and a redistricting committee, just like all the others. Just look no further than ballot initiatives that passed in NEBRASKA increasing the minimum wage in 2014, passing Medicaid Expansion in 2018, and ending payday lending in 2020. Progressive ideas resonate and become law here. Shout out to @ProjectFairness and others on those.

[Thread] Let's review what has happened over the last 24 hours in the Nebraska Governor's COVID twilight zone where he decides to conduct opposition research and then launch political attacks against doctors (only the female ones!) advocating for resources and action: Doctors across the state launch an effort to urge more restrictions after record numbers of COVID-19 cases and hospitals reaching capacity. 748 Nebraskans hospitalized, double in the last week, with 2,681 new infections on Friday alone.

This morning I introduced my amendment protecting renters from evictions, and landlords from foreclosures when a city or village enacts a moratorium due to COVID. #Evictions #Foreclosures #COVID19 A few of my colleagues have given me the courtesy of a heads up (I appreciate it) that they will be challenging the germaness of my amendment to LB 866 to try to kill it procedurally. I'll make my arguments against that on the floor but this is too important of an issue.

Lets play a game called "so you think you 'herd immunity' is a great idea when it comes to COVID-19 huh!?" First, you need about 90 percent immunity to achieve "herd immunity" which almost always requires a vaccine to prevent mass infection incidents. This also assumes that you cannot be reinfected, which is not completely clear with COVID right now.

This week has been tough. On Sunday night someone posted a reference to a political assassination targeted toward me on a gun Facebook group about my LB 58, which would create an Extreme Risk Protection Order for people who are deemed by a court and the police to be a (1/5) significant threat to themselves and others. I introduced this bill over a year ago at the request of local law enforcement and the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office, and at that time it was considered bi-partisan legislation. A few weeks ago one of my legislative colleagues and
