THE worst decision of Supreme Court in 2019 was NOT taking NRC to its logical conclusion. Modus operandi of SC was to complete NRC in timebound manner
BUT after Final List,SC didn't set any time frame to issue National ID card to includes & rejection order to19L excludes
NRC excludes are living in uncertainty. Almost every1 hav docs, they want to challenge rejection order to clear thr names. But even after 5months NO reasons hav been given to them explaining their exclusion. They are forced to live with stigma where their CITIZENSHIP IS UNCERTAIN
Hon'ble Supreme Court is responsible for this uncertainty. So much hurry to publish the Final list, what happened after publication? The excluded people deserves Justice..
Alternative to prove ancestry if not by birth- Article 5 Constitution of India. Eg- You/father/grandfather need to submit docs prior to 26th January 1950 and establish linkage with that doc by ( any voter list, educational certificate, land docs/ any docs issued by govt etc)
I hope this govt realize that nationwide NRC is NOT an option. You can't ask entire nation to queue up to prove citizenship. Unimaginable harassment apart, There is NOTHING more humiliating than to be asked to prove citizenship in your own country.
You must have heard many stories of harassment and even suicide because of NRC. Let me tell you how people felt humiliated in the NRC exercise in Assam
After the final Draft of NRC was published, 40 lacs excluded people were asked to submit their biometric details
I got a call from a 77 years old Bengali Hindu Retd Mathematics professor. (He spoke polished English, later when I met him I got to know he is a voracious reader.)
He called me in choked voice and asked if I could help him as he don't want to submit his biometrics.
Yesterday was a very unsettling day. Met family members of MamiranNessa
She is in detention centre since 2010.When she was detained, her youngest son was 2,anr 9yrs old. Both brothers were brought up by elder sister who was still a minor, she dropped out of school &worked as maid
The youngest son was taken to detention centre twice in last 9 years. He don't recognize his mother
Their father couldn't eat and sleep and slowly fell ill, he was mostly confined to bed. In last 9 years he went to detention centre only once to see his wife
He couldn't muster courage to see his wife again behind bar.
2 months ago he suffered a cardiac arrest and died, his final wish to see his wife free remain unfulfilled. Till now Momiran has not been told about the death of her husband.
Retired Subedar Mohammed Sanaullah , who served the Indian Army for 30 years has been detained by Assam police after being declared a "foreigner". In all probability he will be sent to detention centre today.
His entire family are citizens of India.
In 2014 President of India commissioned Md.Sanaulla as Junior Commission Officer.
He was promoted to Subedar and then made Honorary Lieutenant. After retirement he was working as Sub Inspector of Assam Border police, same Police which accused him of being an illegal immigrant
On 23.05.2019 when Modi won election based on national security, on the same a retired Subedar, Mohammed Sanaullah, who protected them country for 30 years was declared a "foreigner".
