In the spirit of stubborn optimism, I'm crowdsourcing a list of COP-firsts.
#COP27 was far from perfect (and that's an understatement!) but some pretty incredible things did happen for the first time ever (please add!)
🧵
At the top of the pack: a historic first at #COP27, we now have a #LossAndDamageFund
Seems like a few reshuffles but the framework to develop the GGA still stands.
This is the latest text: unfccc.int/documents/6243…
Latest GGA text reconfirms the development of an adaptation framework, consisting of:
-Dimensions (adaptation building blocks, if you will)
-Themes (i.e. sectors in all but name)
-Cross-cutting considerations (inc. Indigenous and traditional knowledge!)
The @LancetCountdown captures the loss & damage to our health from growing climate impacts.
In 2022, these include: 98 million more people suffering from food insecurity caused by heat /1
Heat exposure led to 470 billion potential labour hours lost globally in 2021, @LancetCountdown report finds.
In some countries this equates to 5% of GDP lost, further worsening the cost-of-living crisis.

Negotiations are still ongoing to establish a Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) at #COP27, but there seems to have been a breakthrough last night:
latest draft now has agreement on the establishment of a framework for the GGA - to both enhance action + monitor progress
Current draft for framework of the Global Goal on Adaptation includes exhaustive list of
-sectors (although no longer called that)
-cross-cutting issues (HR, gender)
-sources of info (NDCs, IPCC, etc.)

One of the few agenda items that have been finalised at #COP27 thus far is the Santiago Network on Loss & Damage
The final UNFCCC draft text just dropped.
So what does it include? 🧵
The Santiago network was agreed on at COP25 in Madrid, and will be established at COP27 in Sharm.
Simply put, it will provide a match-making service between countries suffering from loss and damage and those organisations that can support them to respond.
