PARENTS OF AUTISTIC KIDS: You are being lied to by several large autism parent advocates & it’s scary. You are being told #ActuallyAutistic adults & the ND movement is full of hate & judgement. These are generalizations & they’re harmful and very inaccurate. It’s an attempt to keep the divide clear so control over narratives can continue on. Please see through this. Please know there are #ActuallyAutistics who want to bridge the gap, who want unison, who want the best for all involved. I am one of them.

(1/5) I’ve had parents say my petition to ban autism meltdowns on YouTube is an effort to “erase severely autistic kids” from public view. This really got me thinking: do these parents believe the only way to have visibility of “severely autistic kids” (I say high support needs) (2/5) is to post their moments of complete & total distress? Are we capable of advocacy that is respectful to these individuals while maintaining visibility? Fuck yeah, we are. I personally strongly believe visibility for all autistics must be represented.

(1/3) “As a child psychologist, who closely works with neurodivergent children (specifically in the areas of trauma or loss), I strongly condemn the act of video taping and posting a child’s meltdowns or moments of crisis. (2/3) It is undeniably evident that this is a blatant violation of the child’s right to consent, is a re-traumatization, and is a voyeuristic conduit to further stigmatize children with a one dimensional lens of who they are as sentient beings.

The “toxic person” label is now so popular that there’s a huge chance it could be used against ANY of us—autistics included! NO ONE is safe from being put into the “toxic person” box & it’s a super short step from labeling behaviors to labeling people. Autistics often lack the social skills to cope & manage intense social interactions with those close to us (or strangers) which essentially can lead to more meltdowns. Gross misunderstandings & labels of autistics leads to further damage. And THE SAME goes for the other side.

(1/4) Not all autistic people want to be cured & not all autistic people want to be autistic. The autistics I’ve met who DO claim they’d prefer a cure have a history of pain, suffering, & abuse. When an autism parent highlights this painful history in an argument, they are (2/4) weaponizing it to claim some autistics are privileged & cannot have a voice or opinion on this matter. Where does this obsessive need to control the narrative come from? Are you advocating for ALL autistics of ALL abilities, or are you advocating for YOUR financial gain?
