When profs @Stanford launched an investigation of Chinese railroad workers on the Central Pacific, I thought this might bring a reckoning akin to the slavery and justice projects at other universities. /1 Under the direction of profs Gordon H. Chang and Shelley Fisher Fishkin, however, it became both more and less. It flourished into a 7-year transnational, interdisciplinary collaboration, a website, public history events, and two books. /2

Trump says he wants to end “illegal” immigration. But his approach on immigration will immediately produce more undocumented people, not fewer.

Maybe that’s the point. /1 Yesterday, Trump said he was preparing an executive order to deny birthright citizenship to the children of the undocumented. If every child of an unauthorized immigrant were denied citizenship, @MigrationPolicy projects 24 million undocumented in the US by 2050. /2

At 9 years old, my grandfather was separated from his family and placed in immigration detention. He was still talking about that “9-12 month” ordeal decades later, up to the week he died. The wound had never closed. After he passed ... 1/4 I learned he had been detained for just 34 days.
