For almost 25 years and counting, the Council of Europe’s Convention on Human Rights & Biomedicine, AKA the Oviedo Convention, has explicitly banned heritable human genome editing in 29 ratifying countries. 1/5 In light of new developments in gene editing tools, the Convention has been reexamined, and the results couldn’t be clearer: Heritable genome editing––that is, for the purposes of procreation––is still banned. 2/5
