Fascinating conversation!

My take: formations are helpful in that they convey structure. Players benefit from the concept.

Base formations are most easily seen out of possession and attacking formations show the greatest variance.

Principles > Formations. Why? 👇 Formations are merely a way of showing the link between structure and principles. The latter is paramount, whereas the former is more of a "how".

If high recoveries are an important part of the game model, the structure must accommodate.

A holistic game model is key as well.
