Fascinating conversation!
My take: formations are helpful in that they convey structure. Players benefit from the concept.
Base formations are most easily seen out of possession and attacking formations show the greatest variance.
Formations are merely a way of showing the link between structure and principles. The latter is paramount, whereas the former is more of a "how".
If high recoveries are an important part of the game model, the structure must accommodate.
A holistic game model is key as well.
