🧵 - Okay, we've established that the Colorado River is drying and that means serious trouble for 40+ million people.

But what can we do about it?

I've got 8 quick ideas for you that could save the American West some water. First, let's acknowledge that there's no "fixing" the Colorado River. We have to fix ourselves. The only way to survive in these new, dry conditions is to adapt to life with much less water.

Here's an overview of this project and the options to follow: denverpost.com/2023/01/04/col…

🧵 - You've probably heard that the Colorado River is drying and that it's a problem for 40+ million people.

You're probably overwhelmed by the amount of information out there. But I've got six stories here to get you up to speed quickly. First, understand that we did this to ourselves. How we divided the Colorado River and expanded the West steered us toward disaster over a century.

Add in climate change and now we've got aridification. That means it's not a drought, it's permanent.

Okay folks we’ve got another presser coming up in just a few minutes. Stay tuned for more info. In the meantime I spoke with a rep of Under the Sun, an about-to-open restaurant near the grocery store. He told me they just opened up briefly as a place for police and people fleeing to grab a cup of tea & use the bathroom. It was a really tough day for them all, he said.

Okay, we’re ready to go again with Boulder PD Commander Kerry Yamaguchi, DA Michael Dougherty and King Soopers spox Kelli McGannon. Forgive any misspellings, I’m sure they’ll be there. Will abbreviate names. Kerry Yamaguchi is up and he says we have multiple people who were killed. One a Boulder police officer.

Set up in front of the Whole Foods (40th/Broadway) with a bunch of other press. I see a drone or two in the air and a million police cars. News conference starting in about 15 minutes. Follow along for info as it comes in. Going to be hearing from Boulder PD commander Keery Yamaguchi (sp? PIO gave us that spelling) and Boulder County DA Michael Dougherty. About five minutes away, we’re told. Stay tuned.

I rolled over Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. and saw a text message.

"Can I call you this morning?"

The rest has been a whirlwind, all surrounding U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, who also serves as chair of the Colorado Republican Party. A quick thread. denverpost.com/2020/05/06/col… #copolitics First at hand was a recording leaked to me that morning. By the end of the day three others sent it too. On there was a conversation between Buck and Eli Bremer, a local Senate district chair, who didn't want to file paperwork with the state.
