Americans (and too many Canadians) don't understand why we say that the capita of Canada is on "unceded" Anishinabe Algonquin land.

It goes back to 1783, when the British government needed land for the resettlement of Loyalist refugees from the rebellious USA. 🧵 The lands of Southeastern Ontario, along the north shore of part of the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario were covered by The Royal Proclamation of 1763 — declaring them Indigenous lands. They had previously been claimed by France, before losing an earlier war.
