History echoes.
Exactly 56 years ago: "A force of 1,000 policemen routed the students form five buildings they had occupied for seven days, dragging, carrying, and leading them off to jail."
Columbia students were protesting the Vietnam war and Columbia's real estate plans.
I'm seeing on NBC news another networks police and others claiming that the protesters at Columbia include "outside agitators" and other non-students.
This same claim was made in 1968 by Columbia President Grayson Kirk.

It's absolutely true that FL Gov. DeSantis' flying of migrants to MA and D.C. isn't a new tactic.
In fact, it's a 60-year-old tactic straight out of the playbook of segregationist southern governors who sought to try to humiliate Black people and harass northern liberals. 🧵
In the early 1960s, the New Orleans Citizens Council, a white supremacist group, organized and funded "freedom buses" to take Black people to NYC and DC.
The council did this as a protest against demands that Louisiana schools, housing, and public accommodations be desegregated.

The epicenter of the Santa Rosa earthquake—northeast of the city—is nestled in the Mayacamas Mountains. Not to be too dramatic, but the location is like a gateway to Hades…
Although people think of Sonoma County as this bucolic land of wine and vineyards, the landscape is quite ferocious.
The famous geysers north of Santa Rosa are a sign of the geothermal power boiling beneath. This region is a seismically hyperactive.

A couple weeks back when Las Vegas' mayor said the A's have been in talks with the city for 2 years about relocating there, I filed a public records request for all communications between the A's and Las Vegas officials...
I requested all records of communications, including emails and letters and meeting notes and more. I asked for records from the mayor, city manager, economic development director, all their staff, going back at least 2 years...

Breaking: Oakland Police Chief Armstrong said at a press conference today that his claims that protesters were preparing Molotov cocktails at last year’s 6/1 George Floyd protest were wrong. Police weren’t justified in using tear gas and rubber bullets on protesters.
Armstrong says there were 33 sustained complaints. Some officers could account for multiple complaints. Sounds like upwards of 20 officers were disciplined.

One year later, the Oakland police still haven't released an internal investigation report examining whether officers violated policy by tear gassing protesters.

OPD told the reporters for this story after publication that the tear gas report is complete, and discipline decisions have been made, but OPD didn't say what the outcomes are.

Now #OakMtg is on to the "reimagining public safety task force" item.
This would involve hiring a consultant/facilitator at $100k to help the city admin and council figure out how to cut $150 million from OPD and invest in other safety and wellness strategies.
Here's what Taylor and Bas are proposing regarding the makeup of the task force that figures out the details of how to defund OPD and build out other safety and support systems.

Those who followed the Oakland police 2016 sex exploitation scandal will remember Officer Ryan Walterhouse. Amid the uproar, he thought it was ok to exploit a sex worker (completely unrelated to "Celeste Guap"). The DA's #SB1421 Brady dump provides some new info on this case.
Turns out a confidential informant provided OPD's Ceasefire Unit with the dirt on Walterhouse. The source had video, texts, and bank information providing Walterhouse was exploiting a sex worker.

It was only a matter of time until one of the neighbors terrorized by Jesse Enjaian's racist shooting spree sued the Oakland police for allowing him to remain free and armed for 1 week. Enjaian targetted Black residents with rifle fire and seeming impunity.
For those who need a refresher on this violent incident: Enjaian shot up his Oakland hills street on at least 3 occasions over 7 days.
He shot at neighbors and their vehicles on March 10, 13, and 14th.
When OPD officers responded, they declined to arrest Enjaian and disarm him.

I wasn't gonna weigh in on this, but since so many people seem to be interested in In-N-Out Burger's recent $25,000 contribution to the CA Republican Party...
In-N-Out Burger also gave $30,000 to the CA Republican Party in 2017. Nobody freaked out back then.
They gave about the same amount as the private prison company GEO Group and the credit card company VISA.
