I see a lot of people saying "How can Toei treat the Kamen Rider license like this? It's so disorganized. Nothing is in order, it's not all out from one company. It's not all on home video"

It's got me thinking back to the Bad Old Days of Dragon Ball's early license in the US. You had Funimation releasing their own versions on VHS - in a market where you often saw multiple releases; one dubbed (and sometimes edited) and one subtitled.

Here we had one edited, one uncut. Both dubbed with re-scored music.

A string of massive unauthorized charged hit all at once, knocking my bank account into the negative.

They hit my balance and my mood like You'd think the bank would decline a charge if the balance was low, let alone negative.

I want to expand on this, because it's getting some attention and I feel the need to clarify:

A bad translation isn't "a decision that I disagreed with" -- it's a translation that is objectively wrong, to no service of the target language, and negatively reflects the source. All of us, especially those of us that have been professional translators and editors, have seen lines that we pick apart in our heads. That's the nature of being someone who works with words.

But a bad translation goes deeper, and is poisonous to the material itself.

Missing particles. Extra particles. Typos on every other line.

It was funny at first, but it really isn't anymore. This is pathetic, and actively harmful to a franchise that I love and I wanted to see succeed here. And I seriously doubt Toei hears the feedback-- or if they did, that they even care.

They're bad in a way that reflects poorly on the entire brand. And harmful towards any future licenses, because these will forever be the translations that exist in the public's eye.

I'm looking at this Jojo figure, and even though I just watched the Part 4 anime I can't for the life of me think why Okuyasu says "ウンまああ〜いっ" and not "うまい" I mean outside of just being esoteric, or slang and me just being too stupid. I thought it might be the latter, so I threw ウンまい (removing the flourishes) into my usual searches for real world vocab and all I got was Jojo stuff.

PS the Zero-One movie is coming this weekend. It's in its final pass for typesetting and QC.

If you remember how long ago I posted that I finished my draft, you can extrapolate how much work goes on behind the scenes. This whole thing is a labor of love, and we're very lucky that we're a team that have been friends for a long time.

It's rare for any collaborative project members to remain friends for this long without any turmoil or drama (with the exception of PT telling us to fuck off)

For the record I would let my daughter watch Mortal Kombat but also she's 21 so it doesn't matter, and she wouldn't want to see it anyway.

Now the original she loves, but that's because it's hilarious. Last time I said the original Mortal Kombat was hilarious I had an army of dudes in my reply saying I'm an idiot and how it's classic cinema.

Like come on. I genuinely from the bottom of my heart love the movie, and the cast, and I can quote the entire thing. But it's bonkers.

Denouncing violence against Asian diaspora is more than just denouncing direct violence.

It's denouncing "funny accents"

It's denouncing "jokes" about massage parlors

It's denouncing people that surround themselves in Asian culture and refuse to speak in defense of it. When you say #stopasianhate remember to direct that at your college roommate who still does his Ken Jeong impersonation 15 years later.

Taking this one out of the thread for a moment

One of the problems I have with editing photos on my phone is that the built-in editing software is terrible. It adds a green tint to everything, and there's no work around. Editing on my desktop in Gimp would be more robust, but if I'm just posting these to Instagram then why not edit IN instagram?
Sure it blows the pics out a little, but that works for insta.

All of this to say I'm getting the itch to get into DSLR again more and more every day.

I don't want to open this can of worms again, but I'll reiterate:

Henshin only sounds cooler than Transform to you because you don't speak Japanese. I don't want to reply directly to the person in question because they're just a kid, and they don't need to get dogpiled.

I do want to say there's nothing wrong with an aesthetic preference. You can say "I prefer this" without lashing out against good translation practices.
