Our latest preprint, Tracking Cryptic SARS-CoV-2 Lineages Detected in NYC Wastewater, is now available in medRxiv. We report possible new lineages that do not appear in GISAID. medrxiv.org/content/10.110… (1/13)
With @ProfSmyth, Monica Trujillo (QCC) and Marc Johnson (UMissouri), we've been sequencing the SARS-CoV-2 spike RBD of RNA isolated from NYC wastewater since early 2021. Early on, we noticed a few oddball mutations, including Q493K and Q498Y, repeatedly appearing. (2/13)

We used targeted sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding domain to identify potential variants. The five mutations found at highest frequencies, both in terms of frequency of reads within samples and found in the most samples, were L452R, E484K, N501Y, S494P, and S477N.

NYC need to cancel everything. Everyone needs to start social distancing now. If it feels too early, it's the right time. If we wait, it will be too late. #shutdownNYC#COVIDー19
NYC is the most densely populated urban area in the country. The first NY case was on March 2. Two weeks later, we have 613 confirmed cases. I plotted the number of current NY cases by day to see the trend. Data from @BNONews
