What should you expect under SHA?

First is Primary Healthcare Fund (PHC). Basic outpatient services are capped at Kes.900 per person p.a to be offered by Level 2-4 facilities mapped under Primary Care Network.

County governments have to step up here for our health centres.
Image Maternity Care: The inpatient services under Primary Healthcare Fund include Maternity (not just delivery) in Level 2-3. I note that Rhesus Negative mothers will get Anti-D, newborns with complications are also covered.

ANC and Postnatal care will be provided under PHC fund. Image

Due to public demand, here is what I have gathered about The Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) which is an overhaul of the Health Financing (and provision) ecosystem in Kenya by the KK Administration.

🧵 kenyalaw.org/kl/fileadmin/p…
Image The Social Health Authority (SHA) replaces NHIF and will be responsible for:
1. Primary Healthcare Fund
2. Social Health Insurance Fund
3. Emergency and Chronic Illness Fund

Key to note is SHA admin expenses have been capped at 5% (NHIF once had 50%, currently about 15%)

As a stakeholder in the health sector, I’ve looked at both @WilliamsRuto and @RailaOdinga led manifestos and picked out the healthcare elements. Both promise Universal Health Coverage (UHC), here is what I have picked from both presidential candidates. THREAD 1/12 @WilliamsRuto’s team picked out Out of Pocket expenditure on health as the pain point to address. Making a case for it - 27% as actual out of pocket expenditure, 10% prepaid as insurance premiums - be it NHIF or private insurance. That’s 37% of the expenses, about Sh.200B. 2/12

Kenya Nutritionists and Dieticians Institute (KNDI) conducted a study in Kisumu, Nairobi and Mombasa about people’s perceptions of Royco Mchuzi Mix, a food additive present in almost every household in Kenya. The focus was on health health effects - heartburn, abdominal upset. Royco is made up of coriander, fennel, cumin/turmeric, methee/fenugreek and paprika said to be all natural and sundried. These spices individually have health benefits like having antioxidant benefits.

#Thread A nurse, after almost two decades of working in critical care and seeing people at their worst, others dying in the process (because such is life) just lost her sanity. When she reported to hospital, she thought she’d go back home to her family as usual, but no. 1/ In one night, 5 critical patients on oxygen died because the hospital ran out of the medical oxygen. The plant that was supposed to be backup oxygen was (obviously) not working either. And you can’t ‘breathe’ for five people at a go. Maybe one. 2/

I remember asking @MOH_Kenya about PPEs during their initial pressers. Many times they said they were in high seas, or being distributed, or we are working on it and other short stories. #Covid19Millionaires now unveils the pains I had trying to find out what was happening. My colleague @WesangulaD and I tracked the #Covid19Millionaires funds from the moment World Bank confirmed the loan funds...#Covid19Millionaires Image
