Another 5-3 election case decided. This one features Kavanaugh vs. Kagan, in which he agues ballots postmarked by E-Day risk flipping the results, as opposed to, you know, just being a part of the count. electionlawblog.org/?p=117435 These folks... Not only was Kavanaugh’s decision enraging, his work was sloppy.

The alert that broke my phone. America was already going to be fixing this dude’s mess for years. The courts are forever changed by him. But another SCOTUS seat, Lord, have mercy. Mitch McConnell has no scruples.

I’d avoided news of Daniel Prude’s death because I wasn’t ready. Today I listened to The Daily on it. It’s as rough as anticipated. nytimes.com/2020/09/08/pod… Anyways, I listened to this version of “Strange Fruit” halfway through because my heart was heavy. npr.org/2020/06/12/875… So we’re clear, no one in the Rochester Police command staff was asked for their resignation. The chief & two others are retiring in protest. Two others are going back to a lower rank.
nbcnews.com/news/us-news/r… The Mayor has stood by the chief’s actions the entire time.

I slept when the baby did, so late to the shock. It’s only appropriate I learned from a text from Christian. When they say you never know what people are going through, this man right here. I’m praying tonight b/c it feels the only thing I’m capable of. Police shootings are like mass shootings: very American, very upsetting, very unlikely that yet another incident will tip the scales into necessary policy changes. And Jacob Blake’s children witnessed that violence. ‘The rifle was being jerked around in all directions while it was being fired.’ Gunman kills two, wounds another during another night of unrest in Kenosha: chicagotribune.com/news/breaking/…

In Thailand, thousands of students call on the military (& ‘death eaters’) to get out of politics. nytimes.com/2020/08/11/wor… Protesters raised their hands in a “Hunger Games” inspired three-fingered salute, a gesture that was forbidden by the junta that orchestrated the last coup. This piece has more specifics on the demands of the growing protests: Thailand protesters ‘cross the Rubicon’ and risk all to criticise the monarchy. theguardian.com/world/2020/aug…

I saw these pics on the TL yest chicagotribune.com/news/breaking/… & thought it wouldn’t end well, but somehow didn’t expect we’d be back to downtown looting. Check out @paigexfry for the scene downtown. *sigh* This city... + CTA service disruptions. Sucks for folks that have to head downtown this morning. Only other bit of news this morn: We’re a family of 4. Had a super quick delivery. Healthy baby girl. We are blessed & grateful. Thank you all so very much! This is the best (mostly) surprise we’ll ever pull off. Thx, quarantine! Turns out Mija’s intuition was on point, she insisted entire pregnancy it was a girl, so she’s pretty excited to meet her sis mañana. And thanks to Zoom, we won’t even miss Mass!

Logging onto Catholic Twitter after being offline since early last evening...Lawd, have mercy. Things to add to my prayer list:
-AJ’s Black son
-Folks in Catholic media that can’t handle the most basic conversations about racism This right here. Love the fall back on the Black women are pushy/angry/intimidating trope. But, gonna say, this is what happens when the bishops prioritize comfort, anyone else actually speaking out seems extreme. For shame.
