1/ We’ve secured a record-breaking 8.4GW of offshore wind, enough to power the equivalent of over 12 million homes.

This is the largest amount of offshore wind procured in any auction ever in Britain or indeed Europe. 2/ With these results, we are taking back control of our energy sovereignty.

It’s a historic win for those who want Britain to stand on our own two feet, controlling our own energy rather than depending on markets controlled by petrostates and dictators.

1/Energy bills are set to rise again due to a spike in global gas markets, with wholesale gas prices up 15% since the last energy price cap was announced.

This will put up energy bills because of our reliance on global fossil fuel markets controlled by petrostates and dictators. 2/ This government is determined to get us out of the grip of global fossil fuel markets and bring energy security to our country.

Through our mission for clean power, we will build the homegrown renewables and nuclear power we need to protect families and create jobs.

1/ Today’s announcement from Ofgem will be worrying news for families across the country.

The expected rise in the price cap is yet another consequence of the toxic legacy left by the previous government. 2/ Their failure over 14 years to secure our energy system has left families at the mercy of international markets controlled by dictators.

We are determined to change this.

Less than 24 hours since Rishi Sunak’s speech, it’s clear that his plans will mean:

🚨 higher bills for families
🚨 energy insecurity
🚨 losing the race for jobs
🚨 climate failure.

Here’s why: 👇 BILLS: On cars, the evidence shows clearly that Sunak’s u-turn yesterday will INCREASE costs for motorists by a staggering £6bn. eciu.net/media/press-re…

This is the guy who has led the UK to being the worst hit of any country in Western Europe by the energy crisis.

13 years of Conservative failure left this country exposed. Rather than learn his lesson, @RishiSunak is making the same mistake. Here’s why:

@RishiSunak's weak and confused policy will not take a penny off bills, as his own party chair has admitted, will do nothing for our energy security and drive a coach and horses through our climate commitments - while continuing to leave us at the mercy of fossil fuel dictators.

THREAD: WHY THE TORIES ARE FAILING BRITAIN IN THE GLOBAL GREEN RACE AND HOW WE CAN WIN

There is a global race for the green jobs of the future.

Other countries are running ahead, but the Tories are still stuck in the changing room tying their shoelaces.

What does this mean?👇 The starting point is that from upgrading our homes to producing wind turbines and EVs, green industries are the defining economic opportunity of the 21st century.

Countries around the world are recognizing this and stepping up so they get the jobs.

1/ On energy and climate, today’s Autumn Statement was more of the same: unfair choices that will mean higher bills for families, missing the chance to create the jobs and growth we need, and failing to make Britain a clean energy superpower.

THREAD: 2/ Despite soaring profits, the Chancellor kept the Tories' multi-billion pound giveaway to the fossil fuel industry, money from the pockets of the British people.

It makes zero sense to incentivise new, expensive fossil fuels when cheap renewables are what we need.

1/ Congratulations to @grantshapps on his appointment, the 5th BEIS Secretary of THIS Parliament. Fair play to him, one of his aliases was Michael Green, which could be a good sign. 🙂 2/ But he is part of a record of 12 years of Tory failure which has contributed to energy insecurity and soaring energy bills, causing anxiety and anguish to families and businesses. Here are some ways he and the new Prime Minister need to radically depart from their record:

The Energy Bill is coming soon.

After the Conservatives' decade of failed energy policy, this is an opportunity to cut bills for families, boost green energy to tackle the climate emergency, and deliver energy sovereignty for the UK

Here are 5⃣ things the Bill must do: 1⃣ We've got to start insulating homes in the UK. It’s the best way to cut bills and tackle the climate crisis.

Insulation has plummeted under the Tories. And it's getting worse. Their latest plan is apparently to rob schools + hospitals to fund home insulation. A terrible idea Image

After 12 years in power, Boris Johnson now appears to have realised that years of failed Conservative energy policy have left us far too dependent on fossil fuels and plans a relaunch.

As always there’s lots of rhetoric in his article, but what’s the reality? 1⃣ The PM fails to confront the immediate crisis of rising energy bills. He says Government is doing "all it can" but it isn’t.

He is leaving millions of families facing bills they can't meet and rejecting a windfall tax on oil+ gas giants’ superprofits that would actually help

For energy security, to get bills down, and tackle the climate crisis it is time for a green energy sprint.

Today I've been in Manchester talking about Labour's plan for:
- a national insulation mission to cut bills+cut gas imports 👷🏽‍♀️🏡
- clean, home-grown energy☀️🌊

Thread👇🧵 Image 1⃣ Energy efficiency.

It may sound unsexy but home insulation is key. Labour's 10-year upgrade plan for 19 million homes with £6bn a year investment can:
🧾Cut energy bills by up to £400
⛽️Cut gas imports by 15%
🏡Cut fuel poverty

A national mission we could start right now

1/The heat and buildings strategy has been delayed for months. For a country facing an energy price crisis, rising bills, and climate emergency, it wasn't worth the wait. 🧵 2/ This strategy was meant to be the Government's big plan after a decade of inaction on energy efficiency. Emissions from buildings are now higher than 2015. A real plan needs investment at scale to help households make the transition- but this announcement doesn’t deliver.

1/Today's energy price cap rise is a consequence of government failure over a decade to make our energy system resilient, from failures on gas storage to renewables and nuclear to energy efficiency. It only reinforces the need to move further and faster on climate action. 2/Labour Conference showed a party deeply serious about this agenda. @RachelReevesMP's bold announcement on climate investment of £28bn extra each year up to 2030 shows that Labour gets the moral and economic imperative and the need to plan for the whole of this decisive decade.

1/As this gas price crisis comes into sharper focus, some things are becoming clear: this is a global issue, but as a country we are particularly exposed because of government decisions over the last decade. Here's why👇 2/ Despite progress on renewables, we have not moved far enough or fast enough to avoid significant exposure to the volatile international supplies of fossil fuels. Decisions to block onshore wind and cut solar subsidies have made the situation worse.

1/ The loss of 1,700 jobs at Airbus is terrible news and is part of a concerning trend of job losses across the manufacturing sector. For weeks we have been warning government about the need for sector-specific support for our industries, including in aerospace. 2/ The aerospace sector has faced acute difficulties as a result of COVID-19. These are high-skilled and well paid jobs in communities right across the UK. We cannot afford to lose these jobs and this skilled workforce, which will play a crucial role in transitioning to net zero.

There is now 18 months to plan for #COP26. Nobody should be under any illusions that this is a brief window in the world of climate diplomacy. Nor should anyone underestimate the complexity of these negotiations or the attention and focus it needs in government. 1/ Paris happened because of incredible hard work. To be in the best position to persuade others, the gov must proceed with the most ambitious green recovery in the world & move swiftly on increased domestic ambition for 2030, significantly beyond its plans for 5th carbon budget 2/

Workers in manufacturing and construction who are being told they should go back to work tomorrow need to know that they will be safe. Yet tonight the Government has still not published the official guidance to assure those workers of their safety. This isn’t good enough for both workers and for the vast majority of good employers who want to do the right thing. 2/
