Yesterday, responding to a Bloomberg article which claimed that Zimbabwe’s ‘trade surplus’ is evidence of progress, I pointed out that a trade deficit is not necessarily a bad thing. Indeed, it is not. 1/20 I illustrated this with FDI, which can result in trade imbalance. FDI is good but it can create temporary import pressures, a ‘healthy’ trade imbalance. A trade surplus in and of itself is not a measure of economic performance. 2/20

Attached is a statement drafted for Chigumba & sent to me via emissaries at Zimpapers. The minister wanted me to use the statement on the condition that I don't publish his name. Their objective was to meet with and persuade me not to publish details of Justice Chigumba’s sexual relationship with a Zanu PF cabinet minister. I declined their request for a meeting. 1/4 However, I agreed to engage the emissaries on the understanding that the public had a right to know if Chigumba was conflicted.
