In my experience, it's exceedingly rare & quite frankly troubling, to see a senior representative from a government agency behave in such a way. Let's discuss what good governance should involve, Jo Townsend (Chief Executive, Department of Environment, Parks & Water Security). 🧵 Image Does it worry you, that the N.T. is the only jurisdiction in Australia without:
- *Specific laws* to manage and protect Native Vegetation?
- A Biodiversity Strategy?
And,
- State of the Environment reporting?
All are needed for effective Nature Protection.

It's #WorldWildlifeDay.

Australia has > 1800 threatened species & they receive ~$120 million p.a. for their recovery. Australia is an extinction hotspot.

Australia will likely spend > $100 billion on building subs.

Saving species is a great investment.

Since the British invasion of Australia, ~230 years ago, at least 100 endemic species have been driven to extinction.

Just last month, the koala was formally listed as endangered in Qld, NSW and the ACT.

It's #WorldEnvironmentDay2021. The time for tokenistic days & further platitudes is well & truly over.
Bad news: We are living in an environmental & extinction crisis.
Good news: We *can* fix it, but it requires accountability from governments right down to individuals. Thread. So why are we in this terrible mess, nature.com/articles/s4155…, and most importantly, what can we do about it? Well, @DonADriscoll has put together a very handy explainer
