Life is too important not to embrace the silly. Ceci n’est pas une -what you see is your truth not absolute truth - it’s important to recognise this

1/ I am listening to @IanDunt’s book “How Westminster works and why it doesn’t” and thought I’d write a thread of my thoughts as I go through it. A developing thread as a sort of homage to Ian’s coverage of parliamentary debates. 2/ I’m currently about half way through and can say already, it’s brilliant, buy this book if you can, borrow it if you can’t, join audible.Com is the cheapest way to listen (it’s free if you don’t have an account already) but read it. And then recommend it to others

Reasons I love my wife #24567

A bunch of blokes were admiring a car costing ÂŁ140,000

The missus “wow what makes it so special?”

A bit later. “So it’s not massively better it just enables the person to say he’s got a £140,000 car”.

All: “He’s compensating” One of the things I like most about my friends. They prioritise practicality.

Who likes Mansfield? Anyone? Disclaimer. I know nothing about Mansfield... I’m sure it’s lovely...I just have an off beat sense of humour.

If you want to send “thoughts and prayers” to my wife I’m sure she would be grateful.

1/ It’s why I don’t believe in total freedom of speech and do agree with Karl Popper’s Tolerance Paradox.*

Anyone who believes in the propagation of misinformation has failed to understand how it is used to create and maintain autocratic regimes and undermine democracy 2/ nor is it restricted to the political. Consider the enormous harm done by the anti vaxxers. That started by MSM popularising a lie.

1/ IN DEFENCE OF THE ARTS.

Most of the people you see on your stages, hear on the radio and even many who you watch on tv are independent.

It’s great the government is supporting venues but venues also need acts and acts are mostly unsupported. 2/. Covid is a serious problem but over time it’s impact will diminish, either because of vaccines, better treatments or yes, a degree of herd immunity (eventually).

@TexasGOP I wonder why? Could it be Covid? /1

@TexasGOP Maybe it's the Republican led report which concluded
Trump colluded with Russia? 2/

This is the tree that I hugged as I cried because my parents are dead (while my dog barked at me to throw sticks).

#stillgrateful Image No one said this stuff is always easy.

There’s laughter to be had, sometimes it takes more looking. And as someone who has had cancer, considered suicide, couldn’t afford shoes and been rich. let me say this. The wheel turns, it always does.

@MarForRes @SenDanSullivan 1/. Find out more about Donald Trump and the military from Lt. colonel Fred Wellman, former spokesperson for General David Patreus and senior advisor for veterans affairs.

american-podcasts.com/podcast/republ… @MarForRes @SenDanSullivan 2/. Read the Republican lead report which concluded that the Trump administration colluded with the Russians in the 2016 elections

@Brewm247 @rww_gop 1/. Bear in mind the protests in Portland were moms and army vets....mostly people asserting their right to free speech and peaceful protest... so the footage may not have been great.

If you are, shall we say, “flexible” with the truth then it’s an easy solution. @Brewm247 @rww_gop 2/. I realise most readers of this thread will dismiss this link as “fake news” but I’d encourage anyone to use the comments within as a starting point and then do your own research (ignoring any sites you feel are pro Republican or pro Democrat)

1/ The year is 2021

Dramatis Personae

Melcheat: Handlebar moustache, swagger stick, WW2 officer's uniform. Fetishises WW2. He has never been in the army nor held down a job without being fired.

Balddick: Age 40: Melcheat's loyal sidekick. Wears a 1942 schoolboy's uniform 2/ An office in London. Melcheat is brandishing a copy of The Sun and occasionally looking at his watch.

He is clearly agitated.

Enter Balddick.

Melcheat: "Have you seen this report? Risk of insurrection, food shortages and public disorder!"

Balddick: "Sounds worrying sir"

1/ Inspired by @SamuelMarcLowe.

Politics & Twitter can be an addiction
But overdone it’s pretty unhealthy.

So much anger, frustration and even despair.

Day

Day
After
Day. 2/ If it doesn’t damage mental or spiritual health it’s a miracle.

Give yourself a break from time to time.

Most people are pretty nice, even very nice.

(That includes the ones you disagree with too)

1/ I've thought about this and concluded it was never really possible.... or at least not without economic damage.

The same trade deal as we have now (SM/CU) would require paying into the EU and conflict resolution in the ECJ - both non starters with most Leavers. 2/ It also puts the cart before the horse.

The EU's primary purpose was/ is promoting peace in Europe by bringing countries closer together through trade and cooperation. The primary goal was political

1/ In defence of Leave voters (Thread) 2/ There's a certain schadenfreude amongst some remainers regarding Brits who voted leave but who want to retire to France after December 2020.

"They should have known what they were voting for" is the refrain.

In most cases this is unfair.

@GOP 1/ Quick question. Donald Trump hired Steve Bannon, a self confessed white supremacist, as a White House advisor.

Why should people vote for Donald Trump? @GOP 2/ Donald Trump scammed a charity and was fined $2 million. Why should Christians vote for Dnaold Trump?

@IBrexiter @tweetandshort 1. As a remainer I can tell you you need to come up with a better argument than soundbites especially as the Leave voter might only know the soundbites.

Let me help you out.

For example. The European elections, you know the one where you voted in the Brexit party as MEP’s? @IBrexiter @tweetandshort 2/. What about those rules imposed by Brussels?

I am glad you asked. threadreaderapp.com/thread/1093158…
