Week 318. Today I joined @FFF_Milano in their school strike for the climate, against genocide and ecocide. 🧵1/4 Image

The fight for climate justice is a fight against the fossil fuel industries and destruction of the environment just as much as it is a fight against the weapon industries, militarisation and the overextraction of natural resources in communities in the most affected areas. 2/4

Week 308. This week, activists from all across the world gather in Melle, a village in France, to mobilise for water justice and against the construction of huge water reservoirs for irrigation, and other water-grabbing projects.

Constructions of mega-basins have accelerated in recent years…
🧵Image … partly as a result of the climate crisis and more intense and frequent droughts. But this is no way a solution. It happens at the expense of small-scale farmers as it decreases their access to water resources that are already over exploited, as well as destroys ecosystems.

Week 302. This week we are standing outside Europahuset - the European Commission’s representation in Sweden - to highlight the EU election.
Making your voice heard cannot only be during elections, in a democracy this must apply for every hour of every day.🧵 Image The EU has an enormous responsibility, both in the climate crisis and other humanitarian crises around the world.
If we don’t hold them accountable, no one will. That is our duty as citizens and as humans.

Students all over Sweden are today joining the global student uprisings and are now occupying universities in Sweden, against the genocide in Palestine, for a permanent ceasefire and an end to the occupation. 🧵1/5 Image We are currently at Stockholm University, who have failed to cut ties with israeli academia and not even published a statement in solidarity with Gaza and the Palestinian people. 2/5

Week 292. Today we are several people and groups protesting in Sundsvall, Sweden, outside SCA’s AGM. Forestry is Sweden's single largest emitter of greenhouse gases, and the main driving factor behind loss of habitat and species. 1/12

SCA is Europe’s largest private forest owner, and we are demanding an end to their systematic clearcutting of irreplaceable natural forests with high importance for climate and biodiversity. After the demonstration, some of us went inside the AGM to demand accountability. 2/12

Right now young people are blocking the Swedish parliament to draw attention to that the climate crisis and underlying social injustices are killing people, and the situation is only getting worse.
We've had enough of those in power not listening to the science and our voices 1/6 Instead of ensuring an immediate and just transition, they choose to continue exacerbating the climate crisis and silencing activists, scientists and the most affected. A group of scientists is also on site to show their support and show that our demands are in line with science 2/6

Week 285. Today we are unable to have a climate strike. I’m one of 5 activists in a trial in London for peacefully protesting against an oil conference in October. The demonstration aimed to highlight the terrible consequence of the everyday business of fossil corporations.
🧵 Image These companies are destabilising the biosphere and climate, the life-supporting systems we all depend on to survive. They have displaced and destroyed countless people's lives and livelihoods. We don’t have the laws to keep the carbon in the ground and ensure safe lives for present and future generations.

Week 270. Today we strike in solidarity with Palestine and Gaza. The world needs to speak up and call for an immediate ceasefire, justice and freedom for Palestinians and all civilians affected.

Thread🧵 Image It has come to my knowledge that the stuffed animal shown in my earlier post can be interpreted as a symbol for antisemitism, which I was completely unaware of. The toy in the picture is a tool often used by autistic people as a way to communicate feelings.

We are of course against any type of discrimination, and condemn antisemitism in all forms and shapes. This is non-negotiable. That is why I deleted the last post.

Week 261. Now marks 5 years since the first school strike for the climate. For 5 years, every week we've demanded climate justice. Some Fridays we've been millions flooding the streets of the world, other Fridays we've been a few dozen braving the cold outside our Parliaments. 🧵 Image Even if we've shown time and time again that we're millions around the world who demand change, the world isn't moving in the right direction. Our GHG emissions are still going up. We are rapidly approaching planetary tipping points at faster rates than previously expected.

School strike week 251. Today, I graduate from school, which means I’ll no longer be able to school strike for the climate. This is then the last school strike for me, so I guess I have to write something on this day.

When I started striking in 2018 I could never have expected that it would lead to anything. After striking every day for three weeks, we were a small group of children who decided to continue doing this every Friday. And we did, which is how Fridays For Future was formed.

During COP27, we urge the Egyptian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release all those held simply for peacefully exercising their human rights, implementing criteria set by local NGOs for these releases: fairness, transparency, inclusiveness and urgency. 1/4 One of these prisoners is Alaa Abd El-Fattah, who is now on a water strike since the beginning of COP27.
A system that doesn't address the needs for climate justice and securing human rights is a system that has failed everyone – we need to keep both in mind. 2/4

Today The Climate Book is finally released in many parts of the world!

I want to use my platform to share the reality of the climate crisis – to communicate a holistic picture of how the world is changing and what we need to do about it. That is why I created this book.
1/4 With over 100 incredible contributors – experts, activists and authors – it highlights many of the different faces of the crises we face, and aims to connect the dots between them.

Scientists estimate that our actual greenhouse gas emissions can be up to 20-30% higher than what we report. Future climate scenarios and the necessary emissions reductions are calculated based on the reported emissions. 1/4
sverigesradio.se/avsnitt/nya-sa… These findings agrees with the major survey by the Washington post last year, showing that our emissions are underreported by up to 23%. 2/4

I started striking from school on August 20th 2018 ahead of the Swedish general election. It has now been 4 years since then, and a new election is on its way. We are still here, but the climate crisis is still absent from the debate. 1/4 The most affected people from the most affected areas are still being silenced. The people in power still seem to be spending all their time distracting, delaying and denying the necessary changes ahead of us. The emissions of CO2 are not reducing - they are still increasing. 2/4

School strike week 199. Today, @Malala , @olya_mrd , activists from @Fridays4future & @Riseupmovt came together in Stockholm at our weekly strike, to share and learn about the link between girls’ education and climate action and to stand in solidarity with all Afghan girls. 1/7 A @MalalaFund report from last year estimates that if current trends continue, by 2025 climate change will be a contributing factor in preventing at least 12,5 million girls from completing their education each year. 2/7

Yesterday I and three other activists from @FFF_Sweden joined local Sami activists for a manifestation in Gállok. Here, on indigenous land, a British mining company wants to build a mine. That would be a disaster for the climate and environment. 1/4 The Sami communities affected have clearly and repeatedly said no to this mine. We now await the Swedish government’s decision on whether they will allow this to happen or not. 2/4

#COP26: GREENWASH ALERT!

The fossil fuel industry & banks caused are among the biggest climate villains. Now @Shell @BP & @StanChart are here in Glasgow trying to scale up offsetting & give polluters a free pass to keep polluting. Their plan could trash the 1,5°C goal.
1/5
It is time to take down the Taskforce on Corporate Scams.
Polluting profiteers see offsetting as their “get out of jail for free card” in the climate game.
But offsetting is often a dangerous climate lie.

This basically sums up our current situation. The “code red” IPCC report came out a week ago. Since then not one politician has been held accountable. Not one politician has been asked how they are going to act in line with this. 1/4
(Graph by @Peters_Glen ) Our emissions aren’t falling, they are rapidly rising. The climate crisis is still seen as an isolated “topic” and not as a symptom of a much larger sustainability crisis. 2/4

According to the new IPCC report, the carbon budget that gives us the best odds of staying below 1,5°C runs out in less than 5 and a half years at our current emissions rate. Maybe someone should ask the people in power how they plan to “solve” that?

School strike week 151. This Friday we are in a tree plantation in Sápmi, Northern Europe. This used to be a forest, but after it was cut down forest companies have planted an invasive tree species that grows faster than the local ones. 1/7 Cutting down forests - at a time when we need to maximise every possible carbon sink - isn’t only disastrous for the climate, but also for biodiversity. Not to mention the local indigenous Sami reindeer herders who have lived here and cared for the land for thousands of years.2/7

Of course I would love to attend the Glasgow #COP26
But not unless everyone can take part on the same terms. Right now many countries are vaccinating healthy young people, often at the expense of risk groups and front line workers (mainly from global south, as usual...).
Thread-> Inequality and climate injustice is already the heart of the climate crisis. If people can’t be vaccinated and travel to be represented equally that’s undemocratic and would worsen the problem.
Vaccine nationalism won’t solve the pandemic. Global problems need global solutions.->
