Good morning from Glasgow, this is @bencsmoke here for a final(!) day of reporting on actions talking place around the COP26 summit. here activists from fridays for future have gathered outside the gates to the summit for a last day of action as negotiations are set to end.
it’s cold and wet here today but i’ve been told to expect a full day of action from inside and outside the summit and i’ll be bringing you updates of it all! as i said negotiations are due to end today but many on the inside believe they may roll over till tomorrow or even sunday

Pollokshields is an area with a high migrant population and you may remember this as the area where hundreds came out to prevent the detention of two local residents by immigration officials.

around 100 activists are currently outside JP morgan in central Glasgow with speakers talking about decolonisation and the need for banks and corporations to stop funding fossil fuel projects. Heavy police presence here with a chopper hovering in the sky above.

good afternoon, this is @bencsmoke, Huck’s politics editor, here in parliament square where around 200 people have gathered for the @Drive2Survive3 demonstration against the policing bill which passed its 3rd reading in the commons on monday night.
the demonstration has been called by gypsy, roma and traveller people. the policing bill includes provisions that will criminalise trespass which campaigners say will effectively criminalise GRT people living traditional and historic nomadic lives.

today’s protest comes after hundreds took to the streets in Bristol and Brighton to demonstrate the bill which will vastly increase police powers and includes provisions that target GRT communities. full coverage of the weekends events can be found here:
BREAKING: an occupation of @sciencemuseum by teenage activists from @ukscn_london in protest of the sponsorship of a new exhibition by oil company shell has been broken by metropolitan police officers.
@sciencemuseum@ukscn_london The occupation, made up of 12 youth strikers, the youngest of whom was 15, and 8 activists from XR scientists and BP or not BP began at 1pm today outside the science museum's "our future planet" exhibit on fighting climate change which is being sponsored by oil company, Shell.

good afternoon, this is @bencsmoke, huck’s politics editor, here in London’s Hyde Park, reporting from today’s free palestine demo where thousands of people are marching on the Israeli embassy to protest attacks on gaza and palestinian people and homes in jerusalem.
today’s demo comes as aerial bombardment of gaza continues with 139 palestinians reported to have been killed there so far. a further 13 palestinians are reported to have been killed by israeli forces in the occupied west bank.

today there are demonstrations due to take place in over 30 towns and cities across the country. they have come together under the #killthebill banner to demonstrate against the policing bill, which is making its way through parliament.

Good evening, this is @bencsmoke, Huck’s politics editor. i’m here on clapham common for tonight’s #ReclaimTheseStreets vigil to remember Sarah Everard, who’s body was this week identified in woodland in kent following a weeks long search.
Everard had been walking home in this area when she was abducted and later murdered. a serving metropolitan police officer, Wayne Couzens, has been charged with her murder.

students and families are angry that the algorithm used to assign grades (in lieu of exams which were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic) has disproportionately affected students from working class and disadvantaged backgrounds.

hello! this is @bencsmoke, Huck’s contributing editor here once again in london where thousands of people have turned out for the third #BlackLivesMatter protest to be held in the city since the killing of george floyd by minneapolis police on may 25th
the protest comes days after tens of thousands gathered in London’s hyde park before marching through the city on weds. that demo ended in violent clashes, arrests+ a kettle which went on to the early hours. you can see our full 13 hrs of coverage here:
