When French lawfare blocked Marine Le Pen from party leadership, commentators immediately reached for familiar narratives: the left excluding the right from power, progressive forces using legal mechanisms against reactionaries. But this framing fundamentally misunderstands how politics operates at the European Union level. The traditional left-right axis that structures national politics dissolves when we move to supranational governance, replaced by a different and arguably more consequential divide: supranationalism versus national sovereignty.

Understanding this shift is essential for making sense of contemporary European politics. What appears as left-right conflict is often something else entirely - a struggle over the locus of democratic authority itself.

## The Traditional Left-Right Axis

In national politics, the left-right spectrum has long organized political competition around economic questions: redistribution vs markets, labor vs capital, public vs private ownership. This axis emerged from the industrial conflicts of the 19th and 20th centuries and remains reasonably coherent within nation-states. French voters can meaningfully distinguish between left-wing economic programs (higher taxes, stronger labor protections, expanded welfare) and right-wing alternatives (lower taxes, market liberalization, reduced state intervention).

This framework assumes a stable political community - a demos - within which these distributive questions can be contested. Citizens disagree about how to divide the pie, but they agree on the boundaries of political membership and the legitimacy of governing institutions.

On one side stand the supranationalists - those who believe effective governance in a globalized world requires pooling sovereignty at the European level. What unites them isn’t economic ideology but commitment to Brussels-centered governance.

On the other side stand the sovereigntists - those who believe democratic legitimacy requires decisions made closer to national electorates. This camp spans left-wing parties like France Insoumise (which opposes EU fiscal rules) and right-wing parties like Rassemblement National (which opposes EU migration policy). What unites them isn’t economic ideology but resistance to supranational authority.

The irony is stark: traditional “left” parties now champion institutions (the European Commission, ECB, EU courts) that operate largely beyond direct democratic control, while “right” parties position themselves as defenders of popular sovereignty against technocratic elites.

## Why the Marine Le Pen Case Illustrates This

When French legal mechanisms blocked Le Pen from party leadership, establishment commentators framed this as proper consequences for extremism - the democratic left defending norms against the authoritarian right. But this narrative obscures what’s actually happening.

The parties and institutions blocking Le Pen aren’t operating on a traditional left-right economic axis. Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party is economically center-right. The European People’s Party includes conservative parties. What these forces share isn’t left-wing economics but commitment to the EU project. They’re not defending redistributive policies or workers’ rights - they’re defending centralized European governance against challenges from national democratic forces.

The Legitimacy Paradox
This creates the paradox the original commenter noted: excluding Le Pen’s party “empowers” it. Why? Because voters increasingly perceive the mismatch between democratic rhetoric and oligarchic reality.
The establishment invokes democracy while using procedures to override democratic choices. They claim to protect popular will while insulating decision-making from popular control. They speak the language of accountability while shifting authority to unelected commissioners and judges.
This isn’t lost on electorates. When parties like RN can point to concrete examples of establishment forces collaborating across supposed left-right lines to exclude them, it validates their core claim: that conventional political categories are theater, and the real divide is between a transnational elite and national publics.
The more the supranational establishment uses procedural mechanisms (legal challenges, coalition exclusions, cordon sanitaire agreements) to prevent sovereigntist parties from governing, the more it proves those parties’ thesis about democracy being hollowed out. Each exclusion generates more legitimacy for the excluded.
