1/ Uzbekistan govt-appointed commission on bloodshed in Karakalpakstan - least 14 civilians & 4 security forces died - has started work. @hrw is concerned it will not lead to those responsible for deaths being prosecuted & full accountability. A thread 2/ Commission is led by human rights ombudswoman, includes many senators, NGO representatives & experts, others from Karakalpakstan. It is important that NGOs are included, but this alone does not mean it will be able to act independently of govt control. It won’t.

Why is it helpful to think about the #COVID19 crisis from a human rights perspective? Because governments & all of us can make a difference in protecting the most vulnerable and standing up for basic freedoms.
