Thread on the Alexandria raid (it will be quite long)
On the night of the 18/12 1941, the submarine Scirè, commanded by Junio Valerio Borghese, was stationing submerged near the British base of Alexandria.
Six men aboard three S.L.C. “human torpedo” of the X° M.A.S. flotilla of the Regia Marina were released around 20:45 to start a daring raid against the enemy base.

The Scirè was a submarine of the Adua class launched in 1938. The vessel was designed for operations in the Mediterranean and thus displaced 700 tons and was 60m long. However it would have been employed not as standard submarine... #ww2#submarine#regiamarina
In summer 1940 the Scirè was assigned to the X° M.A.S. flotilla and modified to act as S.L.C. carrier, tasked with launching the human torpedo close to their targets. For this purpose, three metallic cylinders were installed on the submarine deck to contain the S.L.C.s
