Secret shh🧵In big days of history newspapers step up to do what that medium often does best; throw down a historical marker of a front page, aiming for impact to leave you breathless. The aim was the same the day the US Capitol was breached. But much else was different+ Same: Search for a powerful image to play big, to capture the moment or the feeling of the time. You don't know until you see it, then you see it, and wow. Then, a headline to say it all, paired with that knockout image in a stunning design. Simple? No! But it happens *chef kiss+

As we await confirmation of Canada's will they-won't they federal election plunge, some thoughts on the potential sucker punch to a Canadian and global eye-view on another super important nearby democracy 1/ thestar.com/opinion/2020/1… New policy could limit the stay of foreign correspondents, like our @thekeenanwire. Stand by for some re-reads, remedial reads, reads to share with those you feel need it 1/ “I think about the fact that I got to live and ask myself this question: Am I unlucky to have been hit with the virus so hard? Thread: I hope today felt the same to Star readers as yesterday & the day before. The torrential sweep of coronavirus news to keep you as informed & safe as possible, rich & trusted voices, original exclusive reporting, care for the most vulnerable. But there's a key difference+ On Tuesday, & ongoing, for what I believe to be the first time in our history, we did it all remotely. Every update, every breaking news alert, every story reported, written, edited, posted, published, every photograph, every social media post, every news meeting, everything+

Thread warning: In a surprise to, well, probably no one, I have strong beliefs about news and journalism. So on World News Day, I wrote this to try to explain why I care about it so much. thestar.com/news/canada/20… @TorontoStar #WorldNewsDay #newsmatters Assuming you haven’t been waiting all your lives to read every word, I can summarize: News is often about very bad things, and can be tough to read. But if we hide or ignore the bad things that happen, no one has the chance to stand up and make them better #WorldNewsDay

Can I take a second to talk a little about journalism? (I know not everyone is into this.) It is a funny business, profoundly public. Your work is OUT there, with your name and often contact info. Your mistakes are as public as your triumphs. 1/ You tell stories for a living, often sad, brutal stories, sensitive stories, of people or communities in pain. Sometimes quickly, on deadline. You do a lot of good, which keeps so many going. Sometimes it doesn't work out that way. All that is public 2/

1 -Warning - journalism thread: There seems to be confusion over reporters persistently reaching out to people who are the subjects of a story containing allegations against them. This is a basic journalistic obligation, to give people a fair chance to respond. 2 - If an editor sees a story containing serious allegations in which it says a person couldn’t be reached, they will usually ask how we tried and how often to be sure they were given every chance to tell their side.
