I've been a part of security operations for public appearances for politicians, movie stars and Fortune 500 CEOs. I've worked alongside SS.

This is a colossal screw up. MAJOR questions need to be asked. If the attacker was inside the venue, there should have been multiple security layers, but everyone should have been checked for weapons.

If the attacker was outside the venue, and used a sniper perch, ALL potential firing positions should have been well advanced before the event, with security/snipers covering all.

I've seen would-be assassins gain entry via falsified press credentials or venue staff credentials, but a sniper from an extremely obvious firing position?

Just a COLASSAL eff up on a historic/catastrophic level. This is how it works for venues of this level:

1. Advance security agents arrive days before the event to coordinate with the event organizers.
- Routes the principal will take are pre-planned.
- Private entrances/exits are arranged.
- Safe rooms etc are established.
- Sniper positions are identified, and law enforcement (SS, SWAT, ETC) is tasked with shutting all possible firing positions down. LEO sniper positions monitor all pre-designated potential firing points. LEO/SS restrict access to potential firing positions.

2. A multi-tiered security structure is built for the crowd.
- The people closest to the stage - or rope line - are pre-screened, and they are usually the highest trusted. They are typically family, friends, staff members, etc. It's political smoke and mirrors, but the people shaking the POTUS' hand, or are mere feet away from him, are not random at all.
- The above section is cordoned off... usually with bike racks or something similar. This section will have their own wrist band or ID/lanyard. Even though trusted, they are fully inspected/searched, and have been pre-vetted.
- The next layer is ALSO semi-trusted. They are usually high level donors. They, also, are fully inspected/searched. They have a similar ID/lanyard or wrist band that gives access to this layer.
- The next layers are less trusted, but carry their own security credentials and thus have been full searched.

3. Bomb dogs are used at multiple points before the principal arrives. A full sweep is performed.

4. Minutes before the principal takes the stage...
- All security tiers are visibly checked by SS/LEO.
- All pre-designated potential firing positions are scanned/verified clear.

How did today happen? The head of the SS needs to resign, and a full investigation needs to happen ASAP.

Just like Event 201.

Just got back from voting. Harrowing experience. Danger was high. I had to dig into my military training to evade all the Corona droplets. Not sure how I survided. This is going to escalate. The people pulling the strings behind the scenes (mostly 60's era radicals), WANT it to escalate. The only way to stop it is an overwhelming police/law enforcement presense. @realDonaldTrump it's time to put a stop to it. The president has handled this exactly as a conservative executive should so far. First responsiblilty is to the local police, then - if they fail - it goes to the National Guard, called by the state Gov. If that fails, @POTUS should federalize the National Guard.
