This is a Very Bad Thing for JavaScript.

Here's why ๐Ÿงต At first, this sounds reasonable; JS engines will just ignore the new syntax, exactly like they do comments! Easily implemented by the egnine.

Until you realise that PEOPLE need to read JavaScript too. This new syntax now litters the code, but is entirely ignored by the engine.

@kiwicopple tl;dr: The DX isn't great.

A few things came up, here's my approximate journey with some highlights along the way:

๐Ÿงต @kiwicopple 1. The signup flow was simple, but I found it hard to find information on local databases. I don't remember there being an obvious "Now install the CLI for your local dev" step. Had to Google for it, and ended up on this page: supabase.com/docs/guides/loโ€ฆ

Folks don't understand how time poor you become when having kids. Parents miss out on a LOT. Hopefully this typical work day will show you why:

06:00 ๐ŸŒ… Kids wake me
06:30 ๐Ÿณ Breakfast
07:30 ๐Ÿ›๏ธ Take kids to daycare
08:45 ๐Ÿ  Back home
09:00-18:00 ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป Work (30m lunch)
... 17:30 ๐Ÿš— In-laws drop off kids
18:00 ๐Ÿ›€ Kids bath
18:30 ๐Ÿณ Help cook dinner
19:00 ๐Ÿ› Eat
19:45 ๐Ÿงฝ Cleanup
20:00 ๐Ÿฆท Kids teeth+toilet
20:15 ๐Ÿ“– Kids books
20:45 ๐Ÿ›Œ Fight to get kids in bed
22:00 ๐Ÿ’ค Kids finally asleep
22:30 ๐Ÿฅฑ Passout
01:00&04:00 ๐Ÿ‘ถ Change screaming baby

๐Ÿง  @RoamResearch has really been a game changer for my note taking & idea linking!

In just a week I've already generated a huge interlinked set of ideas, & for the first time been able to see those links clearly!

A big part of that is summarising articles

Thread ๐Ÿ‘‡

#roamcult Not every article makes it into my Roam database, only those which have some interesting points.

Let's take @pchandrasekar's recent article about the future of @StackOverflow as an example
stackoverflow.blog/2020/01/21/scrโ€ฆ

I first create a Link from the Daily Notes section

They passed that fucking #AABill anti-encryption law.

We're all fucked.

Why?

Here's a great example: some bright fuckwit at Police HQ thinks
"๐Ÿค” Hmm I need to see that person's bank transactions because they might, maybe, possibly a terrorist! (actually I dunno ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ)... Hey, Bank; you must insert a back door so I can access their accounts. And you can't tell anyone."

Now there's a huge gaping fucking hole in the fence around our online banking for anyone (not just Fuckwit Policeman #1) to gain access to our bank accounts.

I've always felt there was something wrong / silo'd about the way big companies work, which crippled their ability to grow.

(thread) In my teams which were speciality focused, a culture of "throw it over the fence" naturally emerged - each speciality has a strong silo surrounding them, often with the (well intentioned) blessing of managers ("Don't talk to the developers, you'll break their concentration")

Ever see a conf get shut down & wonder "๐Ÿค” But it was running so smoothly! Why'd they stop!?"

Shit umbrellas.

(thread) The organisers were shit umbrellas protecting the attendees/speakers/etc from all the shit flying at the conference.

And there's a lot of shit flying around!
- Sponsors pull out
- Speakers don't show up
- A/V equipment breaks
- The recording fails
- Swag doesn't turn up

It's only been a week, but I've already started to realise just how badly even mildly toxic work environments can drag one down over 3 years. I'm proud that I was able to shield that toxicity from my team, but that meant I was the one absorbing all of it.

Just a little bit here, an offhand comment there, a dismissal of my skills on that day, and a lack of support from managers on another. Little things.
