My child's preschool just had another "safe space" drill today. He is 4. He has not mastered using adult cups, and still pronounces the letters "L" and "R" like W (like how a scene in Frozen is "weawy scawy") but this is not his first active shooter drill. Recently at bedtime, he asked me what he should do if there's a fire (when they would evacuate to the playground) but there is a "bad guy" in school (when they are taught to hide inside, in the teacher's annex) at the same time. So I lied and said his teacher would keep him safe.

Our local library offers free, personalized videos (including "pep talks" and "advice") from the puppets that perform the @aadl weekly YouTube show. I just wanted you to know this. aadl.org/tsscameo Image Perhaps, somehow, you were not familiar w/ the cast of @aadl 's "The Saturday Show," in which dedicated library staff (who probably have masters degrees) perform puppet songs like the one you can find around the 1:24 min mark on this episode. aadl.org/sites/default/…

I don't care how busy you are today. Take 8 minutes to watch this. This is happening everywhere. I saw it myself when we recently got access to an ER and ICU at a major children's hospital in Michigan. 🧵on what you need to know. nytimes.com/2023/01/04/opi… 1) If your kid gets sick and you take them to your local ER, they may not be able to help you. Fewer and fewer hospitals have the beds, equipment and expertise to care for really sick kids. That's what happened to 9-month-old Santi. npr.org/sections/healt…

We're awaiting a judge's decision this morning on whether abortion will remain legal in Michigan - or if local county prosecutors will be allowed to enforce the state's 1931 abortion ban and prosecute abortion providers, even in the case of rape or incest. Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Jacob Cunningham has heard 2 days of legal arguments & testimony. @GovWhitmer's legal team is asking the judge to extend a temporary restraining order against the ban, and issue a preliminary injunction while the case proceeds thru the courts.

We're about 90 minutes into day 2 of Michigan hearing to determine whether abortion will remain legal in the state - or if prosecutors can enforce the state's 1931 ban and charge abortion providers with a felony. We're expecting a decision today. It's been intense. The plaintiff (@GovWhitmer's legal team) called their last witness, Dr. Diana Nordlund, a leading ER dr in the state, to testify about how common it is in the ER to need to help a woman end a pregnancy to keep her healthy and sometimes even save her life.

Hello, and welcome back to the roller coaster of emotion that is Michigan's ever-fluctuating legal status of abortion! My colleague @rickpluta and I will be your guides this afternoon at 2 pm Oakland County Circuit Court hearing. (If this feels familiar, that's b/c it is.) Loyal viewers will remember we were all in this exact same spot (literally, the same courtroom) a mere 2 weeks ago, when Judge Jacob Cunningham was weighing whether to issue an order blocking another judge's order blocking another judge's order, thereby keeping abortion legal

Nessel says even though she won’t enforce Michigan’s law making abortion a felony, legally she believes local county prosecutors have “every right” to enforce if Roe is overturned. Nessel says attnys with her office had “closed door meetings” with planned parenthood yesterday. Nessel says she herself wasn’t in those meetings, but believes planned parenthood wants her to stipulate to local prosecutors to not enforce it either. Nessel says that’s “not appropriate” for her to do. Says PP would be “better off” focusing on whitmer’s case.

Michigan AG Dana Nessel is having a press conference now with reaction to SCOTUS leak. She’s surprised it leaked, “but the decision in itself is not a surprise, nor should it be a surprise to anyone.” Nessel expects SCOTUS to speed up final ruling now in response to leak. Could it change, between now and then? Nessel says theoretically yes, but expects Roe to be overturned still.

In Texas, Whole Women’s Health advocacy director Courtney Chambers is telling #hj22 about the local impacts of abortion bill. Women driving all the way to Minnesota, where they’ve opened a clinic by the airport, to seek care. Some of these women have never flown on a plane before, she says. Says staff are repeatedly having to tell women who come in: “I’m sorry, we can’t help you.” Chambers gets emotional, pauses.

Kid COVID vax rates are below 50% in MI. But you know what moms love? Instagram, baby. So the state's paying $200k (plus $750k in ad credits) to influencers to promote the shot michiganradio.org/health/2022-03… Typically, Lora Kawar and Amal Hadid (70k followers) post pics of them looking gorgeous/being cooler than I will ever be, or throwing toddler bday parties that are nicer than my wedding was. Washtenaw County prosecutor will not charge EMU students who hung a black baby doll from a rope in a dorm bathroom, w/ racial intimidation charges. EMU Police investigated and requested the charges. The police report I received from EMU has redacted all names of students. Here's a rundown: a student of "African American and Latino descent" walks into his dorm bathroom at 4 am and finds this doll hanging from the shower stall by a belt "tied in multiple knots."
