Labour has sensible, costed, practical measures that would give immediate help to working people across the country.

The government should hold an emergency budget to enact them, and address the yawning chasm left by the spring statement. 1/6 Labour would introduce a windfall tax on oil and gas producers to cut household energy bills by up to £600. 2/6

Vladimir Putin’s attack on Ukraine is unprovoked and unjustifiable.

His actions will have horrendous and tragic consequences that will echo throughout the world and throughout history. All those who believe in the triumph of democracy over dictatorship, good over evil, freedom over the jackboot of tyranny must now support the Ukrainian people. They have been cast onto the frontline of a war, simply for existing.

After the despicable acts of violence we witnessed on Thursday, the end of the evacuation from Kabul Airport marks a sad and dark day for many people in Afghanistan. [Thread] Amid the chaos, there have been many acts of courage. The Ambassador staying at his post to process every case he could. Paratroopers lifting people from the crush. Afghan soldiers who continue to serve alongside us to the end.

The IPCC report is the starkest reminder yet that the climate crisis is here right now and is the biggest long term threat we face. It confirms that the extreme weather events of recent months are only going to become more frequent, and that we need urgent action both to drive down emissions in this decisive decade and to adapt to the changes to our climate that are already baked in.

The reason why football is the most important and loved sport across the globe is because it is a simple game anyone can play and anyone can enjoy. 1/5 Even in this era of ‘super clubs’, we still see incredible moments, results and upsets.

And even if results don’t go your way, well, there’s always next season... 2/5

The United Kingdom has lost an extraordinary public servant in Prince Philip.

Prince Philip dedicated his life to our country - from a distinguished career in the Royal Navy during the Second World War to his decades of service as the Duke of Edinburgh. However, he will be remembered most of all for his extraordinary commitment and devotion to The Queen.

For more than seven decades, he has been at her side.

Never again.

That was the promise the world made after the horror of the Holocaust was unveiled.

The promise we would not let the appalling suffering experienced by Jewish people be repeated.

#HolocaustMemorialDay But even after the murder of six million Jews in Europe, genocides and persecution still take place around the world.

And as the Holocaust recedes from living memory, it is more important than ever that we remember on Holocaust Memorial Day.

Coronavirus remains a serious threat to the public's health and that's why Labour accepts the need for continued restrictions.

We will always act in the national interest, so we will not vote against these restrictions in Parliament tomorrow. However, I remain deeply concerned that Boris Johnson’s Government has failed to use this latest lockdown to put a credible health and economic plan in place.

Yet again, the Prime Minister has been found wanting when his leadership has been tested.

If I were Prime Minister, the Home Secretary would have been removed from her job. [Thread] It is hard to imagine another workplace in the UK where this behaviour would be condoned by those at the top.

The Government should be setting an example. Instead, it is one rule for Boris Johnson and his friends, another for everyone else.

Since I was elected Labour leader, I have made it my mission to root out antisemitism from the Labour Party.

I know that I will judged on my actions, not my words. The disciplinary process does not have the confidence of the Jewish community.

That became clear once again yesterday.

I know that this has been another painful day for the Jewish community and those Labour members who have fought so hard to tackle antisemitism.

I know the hurt that has been caused and the trauma people have felt. Jeremy Corbyn's statement in response to the EHRC report was wrong and completely distracted from a report that identified unlawful conduct in our tackling of racism within the Labour Party. This should shame us all.

Congratulations to @JoeBiden on his election as President of the United States of America.

He ran a campaign on the values that we in the United Kingdom share - decency, integrity, compassion and strength. And I want to congratulate @KamalaHarris on being elected Vice-President, the first woman of colour to take that role.

For millions of families across England, this week will be a mixture of excitement and anxiety.

Excitement for children who will be back in the classroom for the first time in months.

But anxiety for teachers and parents about a year ahead that is full of uncertainty. [Thread] I want to pay tribute to the extraordinary dedication of our teachers and school staff who have worked tirelessly over the summer to make sure schools can reopen safely.

No one would argue with putting in place local action to reduce the transmission of coronavirus.

But announcing measures affecting potentially millions of people late at night on Twitter is a new low for the government’s communications during this crisis. When the government ended the daily press conferences, they said they would hold them for “significant announcements”, including local lockdowns. It’s hard to imagine what could be more significant than this.

Labour supported the lockdown and has always argued that restrictions need to be eased gradually and in a safe way.

The Government’s actions over the past ten days have made difficult decisions more risky. First, ministers have not yet got a fully functioning test, track and trace system in place.

Second, the Government’s public health message has been undermined because the Prime Minister was too weak to take firm action against Dominic Cummings for breaking lockdown.

At this difficult time charities across the UK have gone above and beyond to assist, support and offer comfort to communities during #Covid19. I’d like to thank them for their efforts and share some examples of those I have spoken to recently. [Thread] Social care workers and all those who provide care play a central life-saving role for so many every day. @SharedLivesPlus carers are at the frontline of this essential work, and @CarersUK are giving invaluable advice to carers, including the millions providing unpaid care.

I know there is growing anxiety about the spread of the coronavirus, the severe pressures on our National Health Service and the risk to people’s lives.

Labour has supported the social distancing measures that have been introduced. However, in these extraordinary times, the Government must now set out further compliance measures, such as those introduced in other countries.

These are vital days in the battle against the coronavirus.

The coronavirus outbreak is the most serious public health crisis we have faced in a generation - more than ever at times like this we need one another.

Across the country people are pulling together - here are stories giving me hope and some ways to help: [THREAD] 1. The generous students at Bryn Tawe school donated food to their local food bank on their last day:

We must support social distancing measures that protect the nation’s health from coronavirus, but we must recognise that the closure of schools across the UK will raise major challenges for families across the country. [THREAD] Many families rely on grandparents for support with childcare. Coronavirus makes that impossible for many. The Government must step in and support families who now face a choice between losing income because there is no childcare available or paying crippling childcare costs.

The coronavirus outbreak is the most serious public health crisis our country has faced in a generation.

People are rightly anxious about the impact it will have on their loved ones and on their day-to-day lives. [THREAD] It is more important than ever that the Government is providing clear communication to the public about the steps it is taking to mitigate the impact of the outbreak.

There are three parts to today’s budget statement:

* The Corona emergency
* The underlying emergency in our economy after a decade of austerity
* The government’s failure to tackle injustice

[Thread] 1. On Corona – Measures to support businesses are welcome. But there are millions of workers on low wages and in insecure work that needed greater support. Decent sick pay must be extended to all and we need to do far more to protect our strained social care system.
