I decided that I didn't sufficiently value my marriage...

And I attempted to teach my wife my favorite app, 𐃏 @RoamResearch 𐃏

Here's what I learned from my mistakes, if YOU'RE in the position of introducing a loved one to Roam 😅

👇

cc @Conaw 1. Forget The Daily Note 👎

The daily note is glorious, but it just confuses/enrages newbies.

Just say it's a catch-all journal for random stuff with no existing page and move on.

I spent FOREVER failing to articulate why it's cool, then we made pages and she figured it out 😅

Off the cuff thoughts on cultivating your vibe as a creator

(inspired by @AliAbdaal session from Part-Time YouTuber Academy) Performing on camera is difficult, but putting in reps solves 90% of problems.

50+ videos solves most everything. Especially if you commit to 1% improvements each time.

This past week, I started a journey & posted my first ever YouTube video.

How'd it go? How long did it take to make?

~Thread~ 1. Script (3 hrs)

My 1st video was a book review of a book I love, High Output Management.

First, I wrote 1,827 words. It ended up being a high-level outline, probably equiv to 10-12+ videos - in other words, way too much to fit in any single video and way too detailed!! Image

A menagerie of @AliAbdaal + team's best thoughts on how to:

- Generate content ideas
- Build a badass recording studio
- Set up your Refinery + Systematic Structuring

(Not sure what the last bullet means? Me neither. Let's find out together! 😁)

👇 Image 1/ This past week, >159 students made YouTube videos (most for the first time).

After many hours of editing and tweaking, we were all forced to confront the terrifying truth:

"The edit is never done. Only abandoned." Image

How to Generate Infinite Content Ideas

- To go from consumer -> creator
- Turn Twitter from a time-waster into an idea generation factor
- Mine inspiration from your daily life

Notes from live session of @AliAbdaal's PT Youtube Academy

👇 Most difficulties with starting to produce content online are actually perfectionism by a different name.

You have taste. You KNOW what's good - but you know you're not there yet. So you give in.

Ira Glass has a great quote on how to overcome this. Image

Session notes from @AliAbdaal PT Youtube Academy: Fundamentals

How to Find a Niche that Will Succeed (singular niches are overrated, micro-niches are underrated, creator-market fit)

👇 Image Finding your niche is a bit of a misnomer, at it implies you can "find" it in one fell swoop.

Your niche is an ongoing process, not a destination. You don't have to hit the target in one shot.

After 7 years in marketing + startups, I’m spending 40+ a week working on my own content in public.

To put skin in the game, I ponied up the cash to buy the exec edition of Ali Abdaal's Part-time YT academy.

(1st cohort, 400+ students)

I'll be adding threads here as I go! Psychology, Ali's Growth Benchmarks, Compounding Growth, and Hedonic Adaptation

Today is my first day starting @AliAbdaal ’s Part-time YouTuber Academy course. (1st cohort, exec edition!)

Here’s my insights from day 0 - intro material and his recent YT vid reflecting on journey to 1M subs. Psychology, benchmarks, hedonic adaptation

👇👇👇 Ali grew to 1 million subscribers (from 47) in ~2 years. At first, he vlog'd advice to medical students, then pivoted into productivity, tech, books, and more.

4,000 was his "unachievable" number sub target. He had a friend with 50K he considered god tier.

Little did he know...

Working on a super thread of 100 Roam Tips for #roamcult that I'll start posting incrementally soon.

In the meantime, I'm going to start adding to a thread where I share daily adjustments or learnings in @RoamResearch as an exercise in building in public. 📜 1/ How to improve my writing hub? This is the factory where ideas = raw inputs, then are processed into future content.

Right now, it's an ungainly list of topics and ideation. Will probably look totally different in 30+ days.
