These are the 8 steps I use to build my 1st video course in public with the community.

I'll share:

- My step-by-step on creating <Easy Content Magic>
- How I get tons of feedback
- My pilot workshop with 22 sales via 2 emails

Let's build in publicπŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡ 1/ Dig into the data

No matter what I do, I always try to understand the problem.

I'm lucky to have lots of data points to work with. If you don't, digging around forums is a good way.

So I saw so many people tell me these: People tell Kevon their str...

I launched my 1st book Find Joy in Chaos 2 weeks ago.

We all know a $9.99 book doesn't make a lot of money.

And so many of you want to know my plan, so here are my quick thoughts: 0/ What book and how does it do?

Find Joy in Chaos is my way of telling you that you can build a strong Twitter presence to get lots of opportunities even though it is chaotic & distracting.

It has made close to $3.6k and I launched on May 25, 2022. Find Joy in Chaos sales

On Twitter, it is hard to know when to blend in and when to stand out.

Here's my take: BLEND IN for things you cannot change

E.g. If your tribe is indie hackers, then blend in to share more development updates.
E.g. If your tribe is marketers, then blend in to share quick marketing tips.

I never want to go against what is true.

Does anyone know how to do a "pay-it-forward" here?

Context: @ParvSondhi and @CSMikeCardona are so kind. They want to buy my book and give it to someone in the community who can make good use of it.

I spent 60 mins thinking of the format/logistics but don't have a good idea 😐 I totally didn't explain myself well in 280char.

Here's what I'm thinking:

If you need ideas to help you #buildinpublic, here are 3 I see you can use over and over.

Not only you'll not run out of things to share, you will also build up an authentic personal brand.

Let's see which 3 πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡ πŸ€ 1. Share a decision you made about your company/product.

How did you come to this decision? What motivated you?

As an entrepreneur, you easily make a dozen of decisions every day. This is the best "building in public" material. People follow you to learn how you think.

I went from teaching for free to now $1,000/student in 12 months.

But it was a roller coaster ride. In fact, a super slow one.

I spent 8 hours recapping my top 10 learnings & mistakes: β†ͺ 1. Start a course when you're in demand with Q's

After I launched the Build in Public guide, I had so many people come to me asking how they could get started.

They had difficulty overcoming the fear and knowing what to post.

You can use content to build up demand first.

Do you get super overwhelmed by newsletters?

This is my way of taking control.

Lots of people ask me so I'm sharing what I do here: First, if you subscribe to newsletters and then let them flow into your inbox freely, you're setting yourself up for failure.

It is way too distracting to see all the unread emails.

I needed a way to not let them do that.

Someone asked me "How do I get Build in Public results with less than 30 mins a day?"

Here's my answer: SORRY! There's no magic here.

At the start, you'll have to put in the time to build up your foundation.

Your presence & credibility will compound and get to an acceleration point.

Then your time spent will decrease to a flat point where you just maintain at that level. Get Results Chart

Build in Public for a book is hard.

It is mostly just words. What's there to show?

So the one way I thought of is to complain how hard it is πŸ€“

Jk, I can do better, here are a few: I got feedback from round 1 beta readers:

🌼 My opening chapter needs to paint a better picture: why should they read this book? How can I hook their attention in?

πŸƒ It is helpful to add a summary to each chapter. I also plan to add a checklist because my book is actionable

Wrapping up week 1, I want to give a shoutout to the incredible students in the #BIPM3 cohort!

I'm proud of them for putting themselves out there and sharing what they know with the world πŸ‘

Here is how we all open up to share this week: Steve (@DrSteveGreene) is working on so many projects and yet he still finds time to pick up something new: Build in Public this time.

Being next to him, I actually feel like I'm his student.

He is very kind & helpful! The kind of entrepreneur I respect

We're 2 months in 2022, time for a mini-retrospective.

Here are the 5 things I've learned in my creator journey: 1. Relying on one source of revenue is not realistic

When I set my 2022 goals, I wanted my cohort-based course to generate most of the revenue.

The thing is - it is highly unpredictable.

I don't know how many will sign up!

It is better to diversify the portfolio.

When new students join my Making Twitter Friends course, I always check out their Twitter profiles.

Well ... because I am curious!

But most profiles are not attractive to Internet pedestrians.

I'd say these truths to them: When I see that you're mostly retweeting politics, memes, or other funny-orientated content. I stop looking.

At the start of 2021, I had 461 followers.

Then writing the 10k-word "Build in Public free guide" gave direction to my entire creator journey and led me to a $4.2k month in Nov 2021.

Here's how I wrote the guide: 1. Not from my dream, I did research

I honestly didn't know Build in Public would become my "niche".

I knew I had to create a killer piece of content people would love & reshare.

When I saw people talk about it but a quick google search didn't show me enough, I knew that's it!

When people ask me a question and I really really really want to just send them my article that explains it ...

I try to stop myself.

The reason is: If I just send them the link:

Yes, they can read themselves πŸ“—

But I cut off the chance to have a conversation πŸ’¨

And convos lead to knowing each other, building a connection, and learning how to help them.

Want to build in public & grow an audience?

Try getting fit first!

πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡ These are the 5 things we learn about audience building from body building πŸ’ͺ

(illustrations by @ash_lmb 🀩) 1. Driven by idealistic results πŸ“ˆ

πŸ‹ Those before & after mirror shots create a nice picture in our heads. Many people jump in without knowing the toughness

Some of us are unsure why we need to build in public if we're not building a company or product yet.

What if I offer you a different way of looking at it? πŸ’πŸ’πŸ’

πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡ Yes, it is true that if you're not actively building, then your sharing doesn't officially count as #BuildingInPublic.

But ... does it really matter? After all, we build in public because we want to develop an authentic voice -> have an audience.

Let me share 2 ways u can do it

Having hired 50-60 people in my career, I love to share my view about opening or hiding salary.

My thoughts after reading this article by @baileytalks - thanks for writing it Bailey!

sifted.eu/articles/job-a… Admittedly, I did have the mindset of finding talents at a lower salary point. It felt like a win for the company as we could keep expenses low and a win for myself that I was able to negotiate in favor of the company.

It took me 2 months and 10,000 words!

With chapters 6-9 launched, the free Building in Public Definite Guide is now ... officially out.

If you're interested in how transparency can help you win, keep reading this thread πŸ₯¦πŸ₯¦

kevoncheung.com/building-in-pu… I was new to this term "Building in Public" in 2020.

But I was obsessed with it because transparency is a value I live by, so I kept digging.

I took lots of notes and eventually turned them into this guide.

3 months ago, I started here on Twitter. But with no active followers, my early days were tough. 😒

I made up my mind to find ways to grow to 400 followers ASAP.

I decided to use basic human behavior to tackle this.

And got there in 8 weeks.

Thread πŸ”¨πŸ”¨πŸ”¨ Why 400? It is sort of this magic number to tell people that I'm a real Twitter person! πŸ˜‚
