The WMSC has reviewed WMATA’s 7000 Series Return to Service Plan revision submitted today, October 25, 2022, and the WMSC has informed Metrorail that the WMSC has no technical objections to Metrorail’s revised plan as submitted today. WMATA’s plan specifies the steps Metrorail must follow to increase the number of 7000 Series passenger trains in use each day.

CEO Mayer: For example, we verified last month that Metrorail has implemented worker protection features as part of the control board in the Alexandria Yard Tower. We had identified this missing protection feature during work on our Rail Operations Audit in October. CEO Mayer: The draft of that report was transmitted to WMATA last month, but as noted in that draft report, we had communicated this safety concern in real time as we identified it. And we are pleased that it has now been corrected.

CEO Mayer: Metrorail’s first revision to its Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan, or PTASP, is on the agenda for consideration later in this meeting. CEO Mayer: Metrorail is required by the WMSC and FTA to revise this plan at least annually, and the WMSC provides additional requirements as part of our Program Standard.

CEO Mayer on updates in the derailment investigation and 7000 Series railcars:
The NTSB is leading the accident investigation into the October 12th derailment, and we are continuing to work with them on the investigation. Last week, the NTSB issued a preliminary accident report. CEO Mayer: An examination of car 7200 after the derailment showed that both wheels had moved outward on the axle. This movement – including any movement after the derailment occurred – increased the gauge a total of 2 inches as measured after the derailment.
