State-of-the-art Si transistors cost $10,000,000,000/kg. Our minds tend to explode or shutdown at a mind boggling number like this so let’s understand where it comes from and why it’s an issue.
How is this number calculated? We need the mass of a state-of-the-art FinFET. We can determine the dimensions from super high-resolution cross-sectional microscope images. For this device from TSMCs “5 nm” node, the fin is about 5 nm by 50 nm by 100 nm. semiconductor-digest.com/tsmc-to-discus…
