1/ Out now: the latest essay in our @CarnegieEndow #IndiaElects2024 series: Anirvan Chowdhury (@chyawanprash) examines the BJP's unique strategy of incorporating women into political spaces through the moral concept of "seva" carnegieendowment.org/2024/04/26/how…
Image 2/ Historically, women’s turnout in India has lagged men's. This came to an end in the 2019 general elections. Furthermore, the assumption that women simply vote in tandem with men in their household has also been challenged carnegieendowment.org/2024/04/26/how…

1/ There's been a recent uptick in interest on Indian democracy on this website. Here's a new, draft paper that attempts to examine one aspect of this debate--the apparent weakening of "referee" institutions vaishnavmilan.files.wordpress.com/2022/09/vaishn… 2/ This paper analyzes the behavior of three "referee" institutions—the Supreme Court, the Election Commission of India, and a clutch of horizontal federal accountability institutions—and their encounters with a new dominant political entity.

🇬🇧🇮🇳 1/ Today, we are releasing a detailed, new study on the political attitudes of British Indians. The Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom is now the largest immigrant group in the country. Yet, we know far too little about their political attitudes. bit.ly/3HwOPZF 2/ This report—by @CEDuckworth21, Devesh Kapur, and me—draws on a new, nationally representative survey of nearly 800 British Indian eligible voters conducted w/ @YouGov in August 2021. The survey has an overall margin of error of +/- 3.5 percent.

1/ Some interesting insights from latest JP Morgan note on COVID crisis in India.

First, while aggregate *reported* cases have stabilized at 350K, seeing a rotation in states (test positivity rates in MH, CH, MP stabilizing while WB, UP, DL rising) markets.jpmorgan.com/research/email… 2/ Mobility/economic recovery indices have plummeted as rolling lockdowns become more prevalent markets.jpmorgan.com/research/email…

1/ New @CarnegieEndow product: how is the world reacting to Biden's first 100 days? Perspectives on the EU, Middle East, China, Russia, and--yes--India carnegieendowment.org/2021/04/27/wor… 2/ Ashley J. Tellis' piece on US-India is well worth reading (as always). Key takeaway: "Trump’s defeat produced palpable uncertainties in New Delhi. One hundred days into Biden’s presidency, these doubts have not been erased, but they have been allayed." carnegieendowment.org/2021/04/27/wel…

1/ I've been helplessly watching the humanitarian crisis unfold in India. Friends' anxiety has turned to distress. Distress has turned to panic. Smart people in the US govt are working behind the scenes to help. But it's time for private deliberation to turn into public action. 2/ I'm no expert on public health or humanitarian crises, but I think there are at least four key elements of a response. First, we need to see senior U.S. leadership express solidarity with the Indian people. To Indians and Indian Americans, empathy will be welcome.

.@gautambhatia88 reviews the tenure of Chief Justice Bobde--"Evasion, Hypocrisy, and Duplicity," reads the title. You can guess what comes next. But worth reading in full: indconlawphil.wordpress.com/2021/04/23/eva… This is an especially infuriating paragraph, on judicial evasion in the context of challenges to the electoral bond scheme, indconlawphil.wordpress.com/2021/04/23/eva…

1/ As a Washington, DC resident for the better part of two decades, I experienced a visceral reaction to the events of January 6. Here's my attempt in @htTweets to make sense of them hindustantimes.com/opinion/americ… 2/ I think there are, for me, 4 big takeaways. First, the Trump era serves as a vivid illustration that institutions are ultimately only as strong as the social norms that underpin them, and the individuals who mobilise to support them hindustantimes.com/opinion/americ…

1/ Interesting insights on the Indian economy in this note by Sajjid Chinoy. "India has broken the link between COVID proliferation & mobility much earlier & more successfully than many countries." Private sector activity levels jumped back up to 95% of pre-COVID levels by Oct. 2/ This is being complemented by the long-awaited pick-up in central government spending. Even as state government spending continues to contract, central government spending has surged.

1/ In the latest issue of the Journal of Economic Perspectives, @AmartyaLahiri has one of the most comprehensive assessments of #demonetization I have seen to date. The piece is ungated and can be found here: pubs.aeaweb.org/doi/pdfplus/10… 2/ The bulk of the piece focuses on whether demonetization achieved its three stated goals:

1) Seizing the black wealth created through undeclared income

2) Increasing the tax base

3) digitizing the economy & reducing the reliance on cash

Lahiri analyzes all three.
