PSA: Recycling almost always consumes more fossil fuels than manufacturing new articles. The “circular economy” idea is a myth. This applies to any article that would not not be "recycled" absent some government mandate, such as waste solar panels, waste wind turbine blades, LiOn batteries, many kinds of construction & demolition waste (cities have artificial "recycling" requirements that lead to absurdities), plastics, etc. Recycling of lead acid batteries, steel, aluminum, copper, and other minerals that have legitimate scrap value has been happening for decades and would be happening regardless of any government mandates. That's true recycling and it's an important source of resources.

PSA: Fission produces so much energy with so few resource inputs that it has no natural constituency, but rather many natural constituencies against it👇(100% honest ad) Image In a fast reactor, one pound of uranium ($65) is enough fuel to supply 100% of the average North American's energy consumption--for 100 years. 🤔Any idea why Clinton-Gore killed fast reactor R&D? They said it was to save money. Image

PSA re entropy: "energy is most useable when it is concentrated and less useable when it is spread out" 9:30
Uranium is the most energy-dense material known to humans.
Wind & solar are spread out over the whole earth entropy is the tendency of energy to spread out and become less useful over time

@marissa69904566 has an outstanding technical background. Wind-Solar-Battery Rube Goldberg machines will double world copper demand in a decade. This 🧵 provides compelling perspectives on “waste”—nuclear vs chemical. This is not to denigrate the mining industry. It’s to suggest that mining and metal resource demand should be minimized. Nuclear power produces orders of magnitude more useful energy, consuming orders of magnitude fewer resources, than any engine ever devised by humans.

Another great 🧵— this time on tailings ponds. He left out heap leach pads. They can be well engineered but if not, failures are catastrophic. The biggest issues with tailings and heap leach pad wastes are (i) volume; (ii) particle size; and (iii) elements. The volumes are massive. The fine particle size means huge surface area (leaching). Third, the wastes mobilize elements that don't degrade.

Sane energy policy finally bubbles to the surface in the UK! Jeremy Hunt deserves massive political support. Low-cost, safe nuclear power is achievable. It’s the only energy policy that matters. For all the comments on nuclear “waste,” now is a good chance to educate people. Used nuclear fuel still has 95% of its original thermal potential. It’s fuel for Gen IV reactors. 2022 tech. world-nuclear-news.org/Articles/Beloy…

100% Greenwashing. Published lifecycle assessments on a simple issue—embedded carbon in a single EV—vary from each other by 600%. Junk Science. Would never make it into a court of law. Just pick the result you like and go for it! I challenge any EV supporter to develop and publish a rebuttal to this analysis published by @MarkPMills techcrunch.com/2021/08/22/the…

@LeaBoothJr published an excellent article recently. It’s behind a pay wall. This 🧵highlights an essential point that deserves lots of attention: Weather Energy Eats Itself on Scale. 1. “Each new installation [of wind and solar] cannibalizes some of the benefits of previous plants to a degree not experienced by other sources.”

Profound--GDP is a function of low entropy energy backing a given economic system. Proof 1: Chaos-based energy policy is eating us alive. Weather energy is the highest entropy energy system imaginable. open.substack.com/pub/bfrandall/…

Imagine 1970s Energy Policy being significantly better than 2020s energy policy. This. Is. Not. Hard. To. Get. No wind. No solar. No batteries. No blackouts. No coal. No gas. 2020s (te Age of Energy Absurdities) - compare Germany and Ontario:

When I joined Twitter last March, I had no idea anything like this would happen. Honestly don’t like to attract attention.

But I’m also constrained to speak my piece. Humanity is facing interrelated existential crises. Not Climate. Not CO2. These crises are Energy Poverty, Pollution, over-consumption of natural resources, and fossil fuel Cartels and Tyrants. Climate and CO2 are nothing in comparison.

Here is my take on this analysis as far as the USA goes--Nuclear Power died in the 1970s because of almost free Powder River Basin Coal, not because of Greens. But Greens have successfully wrecked existing and new nuclear power in the USA and Europe. 1. 1960s - Nuclear Power competes economically 1:1 with coal scale - 500 to 1000 MW plants.
2. At that economy of scale, NP was starting to be economically competitive with coal. PA anthracite coal was in diminishing production. Coal was expensive.

100% bunk. This analysis self-implodes from the outset. The analysis is premised on fatal assumptions, such as the idea that wind and solar "save" energy, carbon, and fossil fuels. Consider this as rebuttal 1: open.substack.com/pub/bfrandall/…

🤔🤦‍♂️ 1. Nothing consumes more petrol & coal than unRenewable Rube Goldberg machines.
2. There is more thermal energy in recoverable uranium on earth than all fossil fuel combined.
3. There is more thermal energy in recoverable thorium than all uranium and fossil fuel combined.

unRenewable power—we have totally lost the plot. #Nuclear Power produces orders of magnitude more energy, while consuming orders of magnitude fewer natural resources (including space) than any energy engine ever devised by humans. Wind, Solar, Batteries, Biomass--the unRenewable rubbish foisted upon us by imbecilic politicians--are naught but Fossil Fuel Converters that add no net energy and waste extremely valuable resources, like diesel fuel, that we need for food, housing, and vacation.

"CO2 Payback" mini 🧵
The construct that new wind-solar "pays back" CO2 within X time is absurdly false for 3 reasons:
1. The comparison is against the existing grid vs competing new resources.
2. The construct does not include all C.
3. W-S do not replace Coal! See Germany👇 We hear it all the time - Wind & Solar "pay back" the fossil fuel (CO2) consumed in their creation within X days. Ergo, from the moment that day comes, the W-S is "saving" gazillion tons of CO2. Change the Climate! Clean Green ESG Love. Under 12 months! Magic! False narrative.
