My letter to the church:

You told me to sit down and be quiet, because God loves obedient children.

You told me to go to church three times a week so I would “forsake not the assembly of the saints.” /1 You told me to wear pantyhose.

You told me to learn how to sing alto, so we could make melodies pleasing to the Lord.

You told me Tic Tacs were too loud for Sunday morning.

You told me not to draw on the back of the attendance cards or in the song book. /2

Just heard my abuser is going to speak this Sunday at University Church of Christ in Murray KY during Sunday School and possibly from the pulpit. The Harmons are uniquely embedded into the fabric of Kanakuk. Matt worked there from 95 until mid-2000s; the family has cabin adjacent to Kanakuk with access to the K-2 campground. Matt’s dad was at Kanakuk for decades. /2

Someone told me chemo is like being hung over with the flu, but worse. Sometimes it’s almost like you are normal, except you can’t remember normal. /1 For me, chemo was unexpected stuff – not being able to see my laptop, blinded by the sun, fatigue, insomnia - and not knowing if it was temporary because of the chemo or something more permanent. And, if it is permanent, there’s no other option anyway bc otherwise I’d die. /2

I was recently at a graveside service, and I wanted to sit down bc my energy level with cancer wanes. However, there were several older people around standing, and I didn't want to take their seats and look rude, since I did not look like I had a disease (was wearing a wig). /1 I stood, wishing I could take the seat, but knowing people would think I was commandeering the seat from an elderly person.

One of the things about ableism is combatting the notion that 'they don't look disabled enough to be sitting/parking there' /2

When our daughter got into a school in Nashville, we were thrilled but had no idea how we’d get her to and fro every morning. I posted about carpooling, and – to my surprise – a woman in my neighborhood named Natalie said our daughter could hitch a ride with her kids. /1 For the past YEAR, this family (I previously didn’t know) saved us 2 hours a day, a wonderful kindness. Then, when I got cancer, they stepped up even more with advice, care, and constantly taking care of my kid. /2

A few months ago, I chatted with the lady behind me in a slow moving grocery line. I asked whether she had children, and she paused before telling me she had a son who died via suicide after being abused at a behavioral modification school: Carlbrook school in Virginia. /1 She had a similar story to what I was investigating at @Kanakuk (and I'd just watched @ParisHilton's documentary about her time at a boarding school).

But now, a memoir dropped by Elizabeth Gilpin, who attended Carlbrook – the very school to which my neighbor sent her son. /2

Two days ago, I posted how Clark Hunt, Kansas City @Chiefs CEO, promotes @Kanakuk, in spite of the camp’s lack of accountability for documented, rampant pedophilia. I did not include some of the most salient details, bc I didn’t have permission from victims.

3 years ago, @GretchenCarlson asked me to look into a camp in Branson, Missouri called @Kanakuk where abuse happened, but few knew about it due to their draconian use of NDAs. I didn’t want to look into this, but – knowing children might be at risk – I needed to. /1 What I found was even more disturbing than Gretchen knew. I discovered many predators at the camp – from the 1950s until just recently – with camp leadership covering it up and hoping no one noticed. /2

Four days ago, Christian celebrity @michaelwsmith appeared with @Kanakuk CEO Joe White on the camp's official podcast. /1 You'll note the podcast is described as "an I'm Third approach to family, leadership, and spiritual growth." @Kanakuk says campers should put God first, others second, and themselves third. But this week, we learned the camp does not live by this mantra. /2

Many of you have asked about Franklin mayoral candidate Gabrielle Hanson's faith. Yes, she hangs out with Nazis and refuses to denounce them, but is she a Christian Nationalist too? This is a screen shot from a recent revival at Harlinsdale Farm: /1 Hanson talks about her faith all the time. In this event, note that Hanson's hands are raised to God, as people pray for her. In one hand is a Bible. People prayed that she 'would be a woman of God would not back down to the demonic.' Here's an advertisement for the event. /2

A couple of years ago, I decided to treat my parents like my celebrity clients and ghostwrite a book about their lives while I still have the chance to interview them. The process was tough and wonderful -- what a gift to be able to ask your parents anything you want. /1 Tonight, we invited all of their friends and family to come -- from various places, including the mountain where my parents are from -- to celebrate the book. My sister made this huge sign with the book cover on it. /2

My Uber driver just asked me to consider inviting Jesus into my life as my savior. We are on the dangerous Highway 17, so perhaps a good moment to bring it up. Okay, so this conversation kept going. He then asked me about Donald Trump (!) and I said I was not a fan, BECAUSE OF MY FAITH that the driver was so interested in me having... and then he began to tell me about how bold Trump is. And I agreed that he was, in fact, "bold." /2

I just finished #ShinyHappyPeopleDoc and am grieved over the obvious parallels to @Kanakuk.

Camp CEO Joe White wrote that he was spiritually inspired by a 1974 Gothard conference in Tulsa. I guess it's not surprising that Kanakuk and Gothard share similar abusive tactics. /1 Both Gothard & White used marriage as a prophylactic against criticism. Just as Gothard suggested his abusive brother could be shielded from suspicion if he married, @Kanakuk also believed super-predator Pete Newman’s pedophilic behavior could be stemmed by marriage. /2

People associated with @KAAKamps always indignantly say KAA is a 'totally different' organization from @Kanakuk to dodge any moral responsibility that comes from being associated with an organization that's covered up and even facilitated sex abuse. But check out this 4th photo:
