The Justice Department is charging 47 people for their alleged role in the "largest COVID-19 fraud scheme in the nation." Out of Minnesota, they're accused of stealing $250 million from a federal program designed to provide meals for needy children during the pandemic. The indictment largely centers on nonprofit Feeding Our Future, participating in the Federal Child Nutrition Program. Per DOJ, they opened sites in Minnesota and "fraudulently claimed to be serving meals to thousands of children a day within just days or weeks of being formed.”

The only survivor of those shot by Kyle Rittenhouse testified he thought he was going to die with his hands up just feet away from the 2nd person Rittenhouse killed. He also testified he pointed the loaded gun he was carrying at Rittenhouse just seconds later.

For @AC360: This was an exchange that plays into the central defense for Kyle Rittenhouse in this case. This has to do with the survivor Gaige Grosskreutz and is separate from the two killings of Anthony Huber and Joseph Rosenbaum.

A Kenosha County Judge sided with Kyle Rittenhouse’s defense attorneys today and denied evidence prosecutors were hoping to admit at trial showing Rittenhouse's involvement in a previous fight and his alleged association with the Proud Boys. On the Proud Boys, and a bar appearance where Rittenhouse posed for pictures with alleged members in January '21, the judge ruled it's not evidence of a motive 4 months prior (the shooting) + Rittenhouse team said he did not know who they were/and has no association w/ the group.

Taking some time off to end a truly insane 2020. Threading the shots from this year’s camera roll start to finish (good and bad), starting with an early year trip to Singapore, a sad unexpected trip to LA, and NBA All Star Weekend. See you all in a hopefully brighter 2021. Kobe’s memorial service + the first known COVID death in Kirkland, WA + COVID’s United States spread, these pics from Chicago and Michigan.

We’ve got a potentially very dangerous situation set to unfold in downtown Portland as what was tens of people has quickly become hundreds. Here are reinforcements for far-right demonstrators marching right into a crowd of counter protestors. Officers from @PortlandPolice are on scene and have been telling people over a loudspeaker to practice “self monitoring.” Up until a few minutes ago this road had cars still driving through.

The Trump administration is preparing to send federal agents to Chicago this week, two law enforcement officials tell CNN, as the president and top officials are promising to crack down on what they say are violence and the increase in crime in major cities. Among those wary of the plan @chicagosmayor who said today, “I have great concerns about that particularly given the track record in the city of Portland." Lightfoot said that instead the federal government could help stem the violence by cracking down on illegal guns.

New favorite activity (season finale): Playing along as I blast my favorite TV/movie themes. This time, Skyfall by Adele. An absolute classic. Skyfall may be my favorite song to play but The Ecstasy of Gold by Ennio Morricone isn’t far behind.

“Elijah McClain should be alive today,” says @GovofCO as he now appoints a special prosecutor to re-examine the facts in the case. McClain died after an encounter with police in August 2019. My latest report for @TheLeadCNN: #ElijahMcClain This all happened back on August 24, 2019, Elijah McClain was leaving a convenience store when he was approached by police following up on a 911 call for a "suspicious person" wearing a ski mask. He had a mask on for his anemia says their family attorney. #ElijahMcClain

Chicago is set to begin issuing citations for those who break shelter in place order. @chicagosmayor says she is "concerned with what we have seen in recent days," pointing to groups congregating along the city's lakefront and people playing basketball in the parks. #COVID19 "The educational phase of this is over," per @Chicago_Police. Today will be a warning, but starting tomorrow anyone breaking what's allowed under shelter in place will be cited with a fine of up to $500 and if violation continues, physical arrest.

What a week. It brought me from one side of the country to the other to report the deaths of Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter, and seven others. I'm leaving LA more humbled than I could have imagined but his legacy lives on and so too should everyone's. #MambaLives Image Gianna Bryant was the second out of four Bryant daughters. She was a growing basketball star in her own right and had dreams of playing in the WNBA. When this crash happened she was on her way to a basketball game. She was 13. Image

Did the lack of a terrain awareness and warning system play a major role in this crash that only missed clearing the hill by a reported 20-30 feet? The NTSB says they’re exploring that possibility among others. Here’s the latest on the investigation. #KobeBryant The NTSB actually recommended that similar helicopters be equipped with TAWS after a crash in 2004 but it was never implemented by the FAA.

Woah. A US Army soldier, Jarrett Smith has been charged with sending bombmaking instructions over social media. In court docs, Smith allegedly told a confidential source “the headquarters of a major American news network would be a suggested target, utilizing a vehicle bomb.” The Justice Department says the 24 year old soldier stationed at Ft Riley, KS, talked about destroying nearby cell towers or a local news station. He also allegedly talked about traveling to Ukraine to fight with a group called the Azov battalion.
