Many gaijins have adopted Japanese. But as a Japanese person, I was born in it, moulded by it.

There are aspects of Japanese culture that can only be explained by a native Japanese person.

I'll try my best to share some of these with my English speaking followers.

A thread: Okawari - おかわり

The Japanese concept of enriching one's life by "pursuing more".

In this capitalistic world where we are limited within our means, there if an emotional payoff in striving for an extra serving.

Regarding Kadokawa's CEO's comments, I have a feeling it's more talking the talk than walking the walk.

The main discussion was about teenage Gravure idols and how some of them are often "pressured" into photo shoots, or are body shamed as being "lewd". (Some are minors)

1/18 The way I read it, Takeshi Natsuno inserted himself in that "feminist space" (the topic at hand), by referring to sexual content in manga and broached the idea of "redefining what content is acceptable", using the example of Google and Apple's policies.

【Sexism in Japan】

In Japan, girls are destroying boys in HS entrance exams. So much that schools are implementing "affirmative action" to allow boys to pass with lower scores.

In a test with a maximum score of 1000, guys can pass while scoring 243 points lower.

1/15 If the "passing grade" was the same between boys and girls, there won't be a lot of boys in the top schools. So schools started to adopt "gender-based passing grades".

When first introduced, 170 out of 184 schools (90%+) required girls to have a higher passing grade.

Dear #indiedev

Please don't expect game translators to do QA for you. It's not our job and most aren't trained for it.

Some offer LQA (Localization QA) if you provide a proper build. But if there are bugs in your game, that's for you to find and fix.

Hire actual testers.

Just like how you won't ask your "sound guy" to do the "level design", it's dumb to ask trasnslators to handle testing. Sure, translators play the game for context, but it really isn't our responsibility to find gameplay bugs.

At best, we look for bad line breaks.

This right here.

Had so many white ex-coworkers tell me of the "racism" they faced in Japan and always struggled to keep my eyes from rolling out.

JP people not sitting next to you on a train isn't the same as POCs being killed and assaulted in the streets. JP does have "Japanese-only" establishments. And yes, there are landlords who don't rent out houses to foreigners.

But the "inconveniences" you experience as a white person in JP is still leagues better than shit other people go through.

Looong Thread: Japanese aren't apolotical

As a JP person, I always find it funny when weebs say "JP people don't care about politics", because they DO.

This is a country that tried to take over the world, a country where students fought the govt and bombed Israel.

Cont Image Politics in Japan is something, as a foreigner, you might have to dig around to find.

It's not always out in the open anymore.

There's some stigma attached to being vocal about politics. And I hope to touch upon some of the reasons with this thread.
