Filamentous phages spontaneously align and form liquid crystalline droplets when mixed with non-adsorbing polymers like hyaluronan

In addition to hyaluronan, filamentous phages form liquid crystals in DNA, mucin, glycosaminoglycans, and many more polymers. Shown here are Pf phage (green) mixed with human serum.
