What happened in Uxbridge?

Undoubtedly, ULEZ was a factor.

But there are other lessons for Labour in this story, as @Calderbank lays out in @LabourHub 🧵
labourhub.org.uk/2023/07/21/lea… The selection process for Uxbridge saw yet more anti-democratic interventions from on high.

The Regional Party intervened to nullify the nominations of a local candidate, helping LOTO's favoured candidate from outside the constituency.

Disempowering.

Three years on from his election as Leader, Keir Starmer's record of pledge breaking is well-known.

But it's not just policies like public ownership, migrant justice or wealth taxes that Keir has abandoned.

It's his pledges on Labour Party unity & democracy too. A thread 🧵 When running for Leader, Keir's overwhelming pitch was one of party unity: "an end to factionalism", "factionalism has to go".

Since then, he has embarked on a relentless & ruthless war on the Left.

Purges, proscriptions, expulsions, abuse of the whip.

Amidst Starmer's attacks on the Left, where next for our movement?

We've written for @LabourList with our answer 🗞️

Here's how we're organising at the grassroots, as we build for a socialist future 🧵 labourlist.org/2023/03/moment… ✊ A series of roadshow events with SCG MPs in the coming months, as we showcase & build socialist success stories locally.

The first will take place with @johnmcdonnellMP in Worthing, where socialists helped turn a Tory council red with a radical policy agenda last year 🌹

The Forde report, released today, is a damning indictment of those on the Labour Right who worked to undermine the Labour leadership during the Corbyn era, and the democratic mandate of the membership that put them there.

Below are some of the key findings 👇 The report confirms deliberate undermining of Labour’s 2017 General Election operations by right-wing staffers; and attempts to shape leadership election outcomes against Corbyn. Screenshotted quote from th...Screenshotted quote from th...

The Forde Report is finally set to be published (after years of delays).

But why was it commissioned in the first place?

Let us remind you. In March 2020, files leaked to @novaramedia revealed the conversations of many factional right-wing operators in Labour HQ during and in the run-up to the 2017 GE.

The files exposed misogyny, racism and a hatred of the left that bordered on the deranged.

Some examples:

Let us tell you a story about a billionaire chancellor, who selflessly served the 1% while nobly leaving millions to suffer in poverty & despair 🧵 Rishi the plucky youngster went to one of the most expensive private schools in the country, Winchester College.

He and his wife recently donated £100,000 to this bastion of (in)equality 💰

Why socialists should remain inside the Labour Party.

A thread 🧵 Labour's current leadership is doing all it can to marginalise the left.

That's why they removed the whip from @jeremycorbyn and have suspended members on spurious grounds.

Their faction want us gone because it is us that is stopping them turning the Party rightwards.

It has been estimated that 60% of midwives are due to leave their profession next year.

@midwivesmarch are organising a protest outside parliament this Sunday to call for government investment into maternity services.

THIS IS A CRISIS 👇🏽 👶🏽 2021 has seen maternity services become critically unsafe for staff and users.

👶🏿 For every 30 newly qualified midwives, 29 are leaving.

👶🏼 Midwifery skills are being lost and the profession is being eroded.

It's been reported that some former party staff could drop their lawsuits against Labour if Jeremy Corbyn is expelled from Labour membership.

The Labour Right want to push the left out of the party. But Jeremy is staying in Labour and so is our movement. 1/6 We have to elect Grassroots Voice candidates to Labour's NEC who will defend Jeremy and our movement's place in the party and fight for the popular socialist policies we need to elect a Labour government in 2024 and the policies we need to change society for the better. 2/6

Congratulations to @Keir_Starmer and @AngelaRayner on their election as leader and deputy. We look forward to working with you both to elect a Labour government that will carry out the kind of transformational policies our country needs. 1/8 We also want to thank @RLong_Bailey for running a principled, left wing campaign full of big ideas, building on the programme she has worked on for the last four years. 2/8

1/ THREAD - Who's behind the Brexit Party?

There's been a rise in support for the Brexit Party - it's proponents consider it to be an anti-establishment, bottom-up movement - steered in large part by the working class.

The evidence, however, indicates the opposite.

Latest figures from the Electoral Commission show just after the Brexit party launched, it received £1m from right-wing millionaires and Tory donors - all of whom have off-shore interests.
