One of the most difficult things about running a business, aside from regulatory red tape and looking for customers, is compiling a list of GOOD SUPPLIERS.

Supplier relations is exceedingly important. If you are able to find a reliable supplier for your key products, it becomes very easy to maintain quality controls via single sourcing.

The matter then becomes how to maintain long term good relationships with such suppliers.

We became used to the Royal Treatment with one of the old retail chains that is sadly no longer with us. Many members of the public will remember the levels of service they received. Who remembers the staff who were on hand to assist elderly/disabled/pregnant shoppers? Who remembers shop attendants assisting customers with their trolleys, even loading them into our vehicles?

When my kids play outside during the day they get shouted at for making too much noise. When young adults make noise at this hour it is not okay.

Daytime is a reasonable time for kids to play. I'm going to have to say something, because I'm not going to stop my kids playing. I can't allow my kids to be bullied over the usual playtime noise that they make.

Actually there *are* shortcuts in life. You don't have to fail the way your predecessors failed. You don't have to bear the financial losses that your predecessors bore. For this, you should:
1. Listen
2. Learn
3. Adapt

I once ran a chicken processing plant. We had a field team of 5 who would go to farms and slaughter up to 600 birds and gut + defeather all within 2 hours. 1/n The birds would then be brought in for production. First step - wash and rapidly cool the carcasses in ice water. 2/n

Today I was shown how to read a car. The sound of the engine, the colour of the engine oil, discolouration of the plastic on the dipstick, sludge, signs of wear on the brake pedal, signs of aggressive deep cleaning.

Yo, these "low mileage" imports are often anything but. ☹ Sound of the engine. There was a metallic vibration. You need to be experienced enough to know how to identify what sounds "correct" so leave this one to the experts.

Professional Email Etiquette. [Thread]

Good morning everyone. A lot of what I will cover today will be familiar to most of you. Think of it as a refresher. A lot of what I will cover today will be from my own personal interactions with other people via email - in the course of business, as well as during my varsity days.

Recall my recent thread on documents and record keeping for small businesses. Many lessons to be learned here.

When the taxman comes to audit you, you better have all your info organised in an orderly manner, or they will do their own assessment. Make sure that all sales documents are either
1) integrated with ETR software, or
2) manual cash sale/invoices are accompanied by an ETR receipt.

Cross reference for easy audit.

Operate BEYOND question at all times.

When I attended a leadership course with Outward Bound in December 1992, one of the senior instructors at the school in Oloitokitok spoke to us about the psychological impact of the real hardships we were about to face. You are now leaving your comfort zone.

There are no telephones where we are going. Your parents will not be able to get in touch with you, and you will not be able to get in touch with them.

Never post on social media:
- identifiable photos of your minor children.
- any photos or info with indications of where you live or where your kids go to school.
- your vehicle registration.
- your travel plans before or during the trip. After the trip, don't overshare. This is for privacy and security reasons.

For everything else, don't think the taxman is clueless about what you're doing.

@museumsofkenya today I visited the main museum and snake park in #Nairobi. I was with my spouse and two small kids.

Some thoughts.

[Thread] Presented Kenyan ID cards at the cashier's booth and paid for two adult citizens and two small child citizens. Total KSh900 for combo museum/snake park tickets.

So much in this story exposes the rotten systems we have in #Kenya. When transacting land/buildings/vehicles etc, the purchaser and the seller must provide their KRA PIN details. Does KRA not flag/query such transactions?

By law you can't even trade in mbuzi or kuku if you don't have the relevant health permits. The system is broken. We're shouting about sugar but we don't even know for sure where the meat we eat comes from unless we ask to see a document. Which means that this fool was either forging health certificates, or his customers weren't even bothered to ask for the certificates. Also, the health/veterinary dept guys probably weren't inspecting the samosa guys.

I think I'm going to spend a lot of time telling foreign investors about what things are REALLY LIKE Tattered infrastructure. Potholes, mad traffic jams. Erratic water supply. Ambiguous road signage. Garbage issues.
