🧵This image was shared this week with false claims that the photograph shows schoolchildren celebrating Hitler's birthday on April 20 in Lviv, Ukraine.

The image isn't recent, wasn't taken in Ukraine and doesn't show a swastika. A reverse image search of the photo shows Russian news articles published on April 12, 2016.

🚀 Per the reports, the photo shows people standing in formation to create the number 55 to mark the anniversary of Soviet cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin, making his way to space.

🧵 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was not pictured sitting behind the presidential desk in the Oval Office. This is a digitally manipulated image.

Here's a thread on how this image circulating online is digitally altered and indications of image alterations. (1/n) A quick reverse image search shows that this image was captured in December 2019. In the original unaltered image, Trump was sitting behind the Resolute Desk, not Sergey Lavrov.

The unaltered image was widely publicised by the media at the time, including by CNN.

🧵There's plenty of clips and images circulating that are years old and completely unrelated to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Clips that are miscaptioned add to confusion in what is an extremely tense time.

What can you do? First, take a pause. Don't rush to share content. Take a look at the comments section to see if there's any indication that the content is unrelated to the current situation.

Likelihood is, some users will have noticed whether a piece of content pertains to a previous event or conflict.

Ahead of the release of the #DSA, let's take a look at what @vestager said previously.

- DSA will update the E-Commerce Directive (released in 2000)
- It will require digital services to take more responsibility for dealing with illegal content/dangerous goods - They'll need to put procedures in place to deal with notifications about illegal content
- Need to make it more difficult for dodgy traders to use platforms
- eg by checking seller's ID prior to use of platform

We’ve been saying this for so long.

If 2020 has shown us anything, it’s that you don’t need high tech to spur on misinformation.

This account was impersonating Dr. Fauci. But look how many followers it had before being suspended yesterday. A few things:

First, this shows how vulnerable we are to disinformation.

Second, it shows how easy it is to impersonate anyone on Twitter.
