@nsgarnett 1/ Two things can simultaneously be true. He can be someone you perceive as a “good man” because of your personal relationship, & he can be an unethical lawbreaker poorly serving our country. Please respond on the substance of ProPublica & Slate’s outstanding reporting. @nsgarnett 2/ Surely you can acknowledge that the appearance of impropriety here is atrocious. Surely you can acknowledge that the failure to report is a problem of his own making. Surely you can acknowledge that this undermines faith in the justice system.

THREAD: WHAT TRUMP'S INVOCATION OF FIFTH AMENDMENT PRIVILEGE MEANS

1) Unlike in criminal cases, in civil cases invoking 5th Am privilege CAN be used to infer that the answers would establish liability. So Trump just handed @TishJames her civil case.

1/ Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams, when he was commander of my district, always struck me as a decent, smart fellow and straight shooter. Somehow, he lost track of the true meaning of public service along the way. 2/ He was disrespectful to and disdainful of bona fide victims of police misconduct. He refused to freely provide information to victims, including Samaria Rice, mother of #TamirRice—we had to resort to public-records request.

Balancing of the courts is badly needed. For far too many years, Republicans and Democrats alike have appointed mostly large-defense-firm lawyers and prosecutors, leaving out lawyers who’ve actually sought justice on behalf of Davids against Goliath. The resulting lack of 1/ understanding of what it means to represent individuals—the precarious economics, the procedural hurdles, and a general indifference to ensuring justice is done for ordinary people—often results in procedural unfairness and substantive outcomes that are unjust. Diversifying 2/

THREAD: I'm a small-business owner. A job creator. Met with my CPA; learned that @SenateGOP @HouseGOP #TaxScamBill #TaxScam will result in a massive net tax increase to my business & me, constraining employee wages, benefits, & our ability to hire.

@GOP will pay at ballot box. 2/ Talk to your accountant. If you run a small business or are an upper-middle-class professional, you are about to get hammered thanks to the @GOP, @SenBobCorker, @SenatorCollins, etc. You may think you're rich in their eyes—statistically you're right. But no.
