🧵Sugar is an interesting story, while the word in English came from the Sanskrit for sand (sarkara), the desi (Hindi & Bengali) name came from the fact that the Chinese knew the art of refining sugar- 'Chini', along with the word 'Misri' (crystallized sugar) via Egypt. Sugarcane is a crop primarily grown in tropical countries. It supplies ~86% of the globe’s sugar (the remaining coming from beet).
Today, 75% of the sugarcane produced globally is consumed by the food manufacturing sector & households; the balance is used in biofuel production.

Set in the 16th century, Mughal-e-Azam was a monumental film for its time. The film has exceptional production value and grand sets. But, this thread is about the incident when it was to be released in Pakistan. Through the 1930s and the 1940s, Shapoorji Pallonji built some of Mumbai’s landmarks around the Fort area — the Hong Kong Bank, Grindlays Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and Reserve Bank of India building.
