Racism is not just a phenomenon that happens TO Black People; it also happens THROUGH black

Racism turned inwards, lateral violence, these are words that are ultimately outcomes of
unreconciled black identity formation which sees those who’ve experienced extreme… twitter.com/i/web/status/1… The ‘politics of respectability’ is a phenomenon that sees privileged members of marginalised groups

🧵Forced removal exists as a sig static pre-trauma variable for future generations of Aboriginal ppl. The threat of imminently possible, unpredictable & uncontrollable child removal led to trauma responses being permanently activated to ensure protection from imminent threat Purely from a position of science we know removal from primary attachments is almost impossible to recover from; however, the denial of this removal by successive Aust Govts until the national apology to the stolen generations in 2007
exists as a unique post-trauma variable/2

A Trauma thread:
1/9 Flight/fight/freeze/fawn are common responses to trauma. The ability to activate all four mechanisms is why people both survive & heal from traumatic events. Much of this capability is genetic & biological (or what we inherit as a stress response mechanism). 2/9 PTSD is when cognitions become so altered post trauma the brain tells the body to see threat everywhere (imagined rather than real).Essentially its a misfiring &the flight/fight/freeze/fawn responses are activated regardless of threat. Over time this response is normalised

1/6 Vicarious trauma occurs when hearing traumatic stories traumatise those who are there to help. It’s increasingly understood in supervision & support but not nearly as much as it should. Studies show 80% of us in the helping profession have lived experience of mental health 2/6 Hearing traumatic stories is part of the job. Our training teaches us theres a fine line between caring too much & burning out. Caring too little & being ineffective & compassionless

1/22 *Trigger warning on abuse. I have long been concerned with the lack of understanding of the impacts of psychological & emotional violence & its devastating impacts on victims. In many of the worst abusive relationships, physical violence is minor and often or barely present 2/22 In Aust 1 woman a week is killed by an intimate partner. These statistics worryingly tell us it’s not the predator lurking down back-alleys women should fear, but the men they fall in love with. For Aboriginal women it is 20times more likely

#RaiseTheAge Why does prison increase rather than decrease the odds of future criminality? Well, it’s predominantly about the stage of development. First kids this age don’t fully understand consequences of behaviours in the same way as adults 1/14 They’re rigid in their understanding of right & wrong & driven by an external fear of punishment. Criminalise kids at that stage of development & you risk their moral reasoning ability stagnating at that level. What this means is they learn how to avoid punishment 2/14

The Jilya Model

🟠 Stream 2: Training in treatments of best practice Image Currently, and despite the significantly high rates of suicide, estimated rates of trauma and mental ill health there are no established treatments of ‘best practice’ that have been empirically tested with Aboriginal clients.

1/9 The Dept of Communities last week claimed removal rates of Aboriginal kids had decreased for the 1st time since 1997. This was in response to a report commissioned to my company exposed widespread systemic racism was leaked by a whistleblower after being buried for 3yrs. 2/9 So I went through their annual reports over the past 4yrs to fact check.I put it in a table& line graph so you can follow it.
The main issue is they use the terms "rates & number" of kids removed from families interchangeably & its misleading

1/9 The core of understanding cultural attachment lies in the differences in Aboriginal parenting. Natural growth parenting teaches interdependence & is often confused for attachment disorders from a mainstream, nuclear family attachment model. 2/9 Many Aboriginal kids meet the criteria for attachment 'disorders' based on cultural differences.Eg. Natural growth parenting means a greater focus on the concept of “It takes a whole community to raise a child”.

*Trigger warning on abuse.
The long term & entrenched impacts of psychological & emotional domestic violence & abuse & its devastating impacts on victims is so badly understood. In many of the worst abusive rships, physical violence is minor or barely present 1/15 In Australia 1 woman a week is killed by an intimate partner. We are the only culture in Australia that requires we ‘prove’ our identity.
We are also the only culture in in which Govt policy required us to prove we had severed ties with our family, kin in order to have basic human rights that were promised but never came. 1/4 As an Aboriginal person this practice so offends me. It makes it ok for ppl to Qu identity & creates a damaging narrative we are all frauds claiming some sort of ‘benefit’ to being Aboriginal. I am lucky. I know who I am. I’ve never had to “prove” my Aboriginality. 2/4

2yrs ago, I wrote this Opinion Piece. Indigenous suicides are escalating; all of the funding is quarantined by a handful of 'experts' who have failed to advance the science of suicide prevention in a way that is objective or measurable 1/14
indigenousx.com.au/aboriginal-sui… We have enormous amounts of funding injected into this area; yet our Indigenous youth are dying by suicide at EIGHT times the rate of non-Indigenous children and it is only right that we ask why this level of funding has had little to no impact. 2/14

I wrote this for the Australian in reaction to the Fed Govts claims they put $134M into 'Indigenous suicide prevention'. This crudely translates to $250K per death by suicide of an Indigenous person; throw state & other funding in, you are close to $1M per suicide death 1/22 Yet as a country facing this growing tragedy of Indigenous child suicides, we have NO nationally accepted evidence based programs across the spectrum of early int'vn & prevention. Staggeringly, funded programs are NOT required to show they are reducing MH or suicide risk 2/22
