This is what fascism is. If you're still somehow wringing your hands saying "well, we shouldn't throw around terms so loosely," literally just look at this proposal from the GOVERNOR OF FLORIDA which criminalizes all protests and legalizes murder of protesters by car. Just to be clear, fascism is already here. Police and prosecutors ALREADY find every excuse they can to criminalize protesters and condone other fascists mowing them down.

At a minimum: if you won't recognize it, call it out, and FIGHT IT, you are helping fascism advance.

Last night I streamed for 5 hours and discussed a wide range of real life topics with viewers - social justice, nuance, policing, among others.

Going forward, my stream will continue to be an open discussion space for these topics that matter. The only prerequisite is empathy. Preface: the below is NOT intended as a subtweet of any specific person.

I've seen a lot of talk lately about streams being "escapes" from harsh reality, asking people to leave heavy topics at the door. The problem is that "just not talking about it" provides unequal benefit.

Every day, you wake up and get to make a choice.

You can choose to take on the problems of people who are not like you, and fight for their equality.

Or you can center your personal comfort and shoot down those who are being too noisy.

(read the WHOLE thread; cw: profanity) Every day, I'm surrounded by people who can't seem to imagine investing beyond an intellectual level in any problem that doesn't directly affect them.

It is literally killing me. We cannot accomplish anything without the help of people who do not even give a single shit.

I dunno who needs to hear this, but directing (intentionally or not) anger towards someone or some organization for not taking action against an abuser is NOT EQUIVALENT to being an abuser.

Defensive kneejerk reactions to criticism prop up systemic inequality and rape culture. What is "cancel culture?" It's the idea (right or wrong) of people being unjustly, SYSTEMICALLY deprived of their voice.

What does SYSTEMIC mean? It means that an inequality is baked into the status quo, and supported on a widespread basis by a POWER IMBALANCE between groups.

I heavily, heavily, HEAVILY encourage all of my friends to read this thread in its entirety.

"Being a good person" is not a condition - it is an ACTION.
"Being an ally" is not a condition - it is an ACTION.

Spreading awareness is okay. Discussion is good. But make sure to ACT. Muffins crystallizes so many feelings I've been having lately about the performative allyship of folks I know who only found their social justice voice on May 25, but spend it calling out specific people and brands for not also performing allyship along with them.

On July 4, 1776, representatives of the 13 British colonies in North America approved the text of a "Declaration of Independence." This document explained the reasons that the colonies were unilaterally declaring themselves free of British rule. Among the first words of this document is the notorious phrase: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal..."

When this document was written, approximately 20% of the population of the 13 colonies was enslaved. (source: teachinghistory.org/history-conten…)

cw: suicide

Hello - when a prominent community person dies by suicide, please be conscious about how you talk about it. There's a phenomenon called "suicide contagion" which can put other people struggling with their mental health at risk.

If you're experiencing suicidal thoughts right now, please google "suicide hotline" and call - in the USA, it's 1-800-273-8255.

If you can't quickly find a good resource in your country, or don't feel comfortable talking to a stranger, please reach out to friends or family.

Every time I see folks pleading that Breonna Taylor's name is no longer trending, and to please keep calling for justice against her killers - I think of the utter embarrassment and dereliction of ethical duty that is the Twitter "trending" algorithm. They have a helpful FAQ page giving some basic details and even the brief summary here should be cause for red flags. This literally encodes into the platform a preference for intense, fleeting engagement in a particular topic before discarding it in favor of others. Twitter FAQ: How are trends...

The thing that kills me?

It's not the people so filled with hate that they gleefully cheer on police brutality.

It's the people who just don't care, because it doesn't affect them, or because they legitimately think this is how you act with authority.

#BlackLivesMatter If you can watch even a single one of the videos I've retweeted over the weekend, or that anyone else has retweeted, of unprovoked or completely disproportionate police brutality, and not feel the bile rising in your throat...what kind of person are you?

News reports indicate over a thousand protesters have been arrested in the #GeorgeFloyd protests. The racist mechanism of cash bail (which disproportionately affects Black people) deprives them of their liberty by keeping them in jail indefinitely until trial.

#BlackLivesMatter Read more about cash bail and how it targets Black people (and other convenient targets!): brennancenter.org/our-work/resea…

Consider donating to one of many community-based cash bail funds: communityjusticeexchange.org/nbfn-directory

If you're not Black, you might be looking at these protests and comparing to the lockdown protests earlier this month. What's the difference?

Lockdown protestors were calling for a RETURN to the status quo. Black people are demanding an END to it.

#BlackLivesMatter If, like me, you had the privilege of being able to live with comfort and safety in US society before the pandemic, it is tempting to want to return to that.

You have to understand that that comfort was built on racism and structural inequality.

I have seen a bunch of takes the last couple days saying that the violence in the #GeorgeFloyd riots is caused by external [mostly white] actors. Please think carefully about the context when you choose to elevate these messages.

#BlackLivesMatter There are two pernicious effects of this messaging. The first is that it implicitly legitimizes the black-and-white thinking that all violent protest is inherently bad. This thinking is exactly what empowers state actors to respond with disproportionate force.

Two weeks ago at #RPGLB2019 I talked during the finale about some of my past experiences and how my own mental health has affected RPG Limit Break, an event which I cofounded and for which I have been tech coordinator since the start. Here's a longer version of that story. 1/? Let's start in 2013. I had been working at Cryptic Studios for just over 4 years, doing all sorts of cool stuff as a server/infrastructure programmer. It was a job I loved and had a ton of passion for. Early 2013 was our last-minute crunch to release Neverwinter. 2/?

The RPG speedrunning community is truly special, and it is the uniquely selfless and empathetic character of this community that makes @RPGLimitBreak what it is. #RPGLB2019 Our event doesn't happen because of a dozen staff members. It doesn't happen because of a couple dozen volunteers. It doesn't happen because of runners or commentators. It happens because of EVERYONE. #RPGLB2019

Okay, I really like this one, let's go:

Bonus round:

Multicolored dude dodges balls and fights enemies for no reason.

Hello, I don't normally swear on Twitter, but tonight will be a mild exception. If you come to a space that I moderate on the internet (such as my stream or the Ori discord) and try to spread garbage views like "gay people are consumed by their sexuality" or "trans people are mentally ill," I have no qualms about telling you to fuck off forever.

Let's talk about impostor syndrome in social situations. A huge amount of my time at GDQs is spent just walking around the event rooms, seeing who's there, and spending maybe 5-10 minutes at a time chatting with random people.

Here's the video of my 29:49 in Ori DE all skills, which I achieved last night. Despite the mistakes, it's hard not to view this as the greatest speedrun I've done. Volume warning around 29 minutes in. ;) twitch.tv/videos/3435776… If you watch past the end of the credits, you get to hear me become an incoherent blubbering wreck on stream as I talk about what this run means to me, which might not be apparent if you haven't been constantly hanging around my stream all year.

I guess today is the day we learn which speedrunners know the difference between a "hack" and an "account compromise", and who knows what password security is. Let me provide some tips based on what I've been reading so far. All of the evidence points to a couple (handful? bunch?) of specific speedrun.com accounts being compromised, i.e. they were accessed by someone other than their real owner.

Hey everyone! This might come as a bit of a surprise, but after AGDQ 2019 I will be stepping down from GDQ staff. I'll continue to attend and volunteer at GDQs, don't worry. I just won't be doing staff stuff/game selections anymore.

Here's a pastebin: pastebin.com/N8nNyG2Q <3 I want to express my sincere appreciation to GDQ for the opportunity to work on the events that brought me into the speedrunning community in 2013. My pride in what we've accomplished since then is boundless.

This doesn't come up very often on Twitter, but for anyone who doesn't know, I'm gay. Let me talk about what Pride means to me. (1/14) I don't really outwardly celebrate Pride month/activities, and I don't often talk about my sexuality. It's not really related to speedrunning. (2/14)
