It's not that the RSA is advising hi-vis clothing for people per se. It's that the ONLY thing the RSA does around cycling safety is promote hi-vis clothing, even in situations where evidence shows there's little benefit.

The RSAs obsession with hi-vis implies it's the panacea. Hi-vis is not the panacea for cycling safety let me tell you.

Once, I was knocked off my bike on the quays in dark hours. I was wearing hi-vis and with strong lights. The driver turned left across me knocking over. The driver apologised that she 'didn't see me'

[Thread] Huge thank-you to @kieranryanphoto the @dublincycling volunteer communications coordinator for organising tonight's discussion on Building a Sustainable Future for the #PhoenixPark.

There were so many outstanding contributions. A few that stood out: .@NorahCasey talking about growing up the park was fascinating. A key change she noticed was the huge increase of families out in the park during lockdown, just like it was during her childhood.

She spoke so well of the park as a home for wildlife in the city.

🚧🛠️ Quick Pour Concrete Cycle Lane Kerbs 🛠️🚧

This is a nerdy thread about *concrete kerbs* but I promise it will be fascinating.

This new construction technique could quickly see concrete kerbs added to protect cycle lanes overnight. No more plastic bollards. Traditionally adding concrete kerbs to cycle lanes similar to Benildus Avenue would take 2-3 years.

Engineers would need to redesign the road's drainage, go to tender and spend 6 months at construction.

Construction here will be completed in less than 2 weeks.

[Thread] The NTA have published new drawings for the #BusConnects Core Bus Corridors. This project aims to deliver 200km of cycle track and 230km of bus lanes in Dublin.

Let's have a deeper look at corridors 6-12 on the south west side of the city. Let's start with #BusConnects Core Bus Corridor (CBC) 6 from Lucan to Heuston Station. This route follows the N4/Chapelizod Bypass to the Liffey.

There are some big improvements for cycling along this route.

The latest #BusConnects Core Bus Corridor plans have been released today by the NTA. From first glance at the northside routes (CBC1-5) there are good improvements for cycling. Though there are still tons of issues to work through.

A quick overview of the northside CBCs CBC1 runs from Clongriffin to Marino via the Malahide Road. The junctions were the main issue with this route for people cycling. They are much improved in places (though some issues remain). The majority of bus stops do not cut into the cycle track

[Thread] A #StreetsAreForPeople action has began on Liffey Street Lower just north of Halpenny Bridge in Dublin. Volunteers from @dublincycling @IrishPedestrian @DublinCommuters and XR Dublin have erected a blockade to open the street for people to enjoy free from traffic. .@DubCityCouncil councillors will vote on 2nd September to approve or reject proposals to pedestrianise this part of Liffey Street Lower. Some powerful business organisations oppose all changes. The street upgrade will pedestrianise the section between Grand Social and the quays.

This is brand new cycle infrastructure in @dlrcc built to the standards of the NTA’s National Cycle Manual. The manual is flawed. It requires too much painted cycle lane and the limited number of places there are curbs they are small and ineffective. #DeathByDesign @dlrcc Here's footage of the painted cycle lanes at this junction being ignored. Driving in a mandatory cycle lane is dangerous and illegal.

[Thread] This is factually incorrect research. 4,700 trees will not be felled. I have spent over 7 months researching the @BusConnects Core Bus Corridors and I've written 10,000s of words for @dublincycling. This research suffers from a clear fatal flaw in the methodology The methodology is completely flawed. They drew a 20m wide corridor along each route on satellite photos and attempted to count the number of affected trees. This is completely ignores the actual published maps from #BusConnects.

[Thread] Permission was given by An Bord Pleanala on appeal for a 22 storey hotel and office building beside Tara DART Station. At 88m it will be Ireland's tallest building. This is the second time a similar application has been made for this site by Johnny Ronan. Let's dig in... Here's a few more photomontages of the proposed building. The building is based on a 5 storey podium, which will be the hotel. There is a more slender tower element on top of that podium.

[Thread] There's some interesting changes along the northern section of #Metrolink between Stephen's Green and Swords. Let's briefly look at them and the large decisions that have been made. Big change is that the tunnel will now be single-bore and not twin-bore like before. This means one tunnel with the two trains side by side. This can be cheaper and provides more flexibility. It also means the tunnel boring site can be moved from Na Fianna lands to land near M50

[Thread] Not upgrading the Green Line to metro as part of #Metrolink will be bad for pedestrians, cyclists, bus users, Luas Red Line in the city centre. Instead they are proposing to run 55m trams every 2 minutes on city centre streets, which is ambitious to say the least. Competition for space in the city centre is always going to be high. We should be prioritising pedestrians and cyclists ahead of public transport. However, running 55m trams at every 2 minutes, sounds like we're going to be prioritising public transport.

NTA: "Any criticism of the Dodder Greenway was premature because the preferred route had not yet been identified." Firstly the NTA hired this man as a consultant for the Dodder Greenway in 2013. It's now 2018, their fast movers in the NTA. Secondly...

[Thread]: I've finished reading the full inspector's report on the College Green Plaza decision. It's an interesting read and includes lots of interesting insights. I'm personally disappointed but refusal isn't unreasonable. #CollegeGreen The decision says the principle of the development is acceptable. The four issues are the unclear traffic modelling; the impacts on bus passengers; can the quays support more buses; and failure to demonstrate that quays footpaths can support new bus passengers.
