About a dozen years ago I did a bit of a deep dive on Ginni Thomas for Bill Maher’s show. A couple of things you should know:

For one, unlike a lot of the MAGA crowd, she is not new to conspiracy theories and far-right kookiness. (1/several) Remember the Tea Party? When it was just getting started, Ginni Thomas leapt into action and founded “Liberty Central,” a website/organization devoted to combatting President Obama’s socialist revolution.

Don’t bother looking for it - it dissolved in 2012.

Fuck this. I recognized this BS immediately. Quick story:

In 2010, legalizing marijuana was on the ballot in California. It was polling well, but it was close. (1/3) LA County Sheriff Lee Baca, a huge opponent of the measure (and an equally huge asshole) suddenly warned parents about the “credible threat” of pot-laced Halloween candy.

Of course there was no credible threat. No one ever does that. And how would they “threaten” to do so?

OK. If you aren’t a New Yorker, please read this. Read the thread below and listen. I will speak for about 10 million people, so this is a challenge... but I think anyone who lived in NY in the 80s will agree... When I was kid, in the 70s and 80s, New York City was a bizarre, filthy, boisterous shit show.

I lived on Long Island, a half hour from “The City.” We all paid attention to The City. It was full of gigantic characters. Like Ed Koch. George Steinbrenner. And Donald Trump.

THREAD: A White Person’s Guide to BLM Protests
by a white person

So, you’re white and you want to protest on behalf of #BlackLivesMatter? That’s great! Here’s what you need to know. You were raised to think that your emotions matter. In this case they don’t. If you don’t think you can stay in control of yourself, even if you get punched or tear-gassed, stay home. Really.

Shush, teevee people. It’s not over for Sanders, but here’s what’s happening:

Presented with Bernie Sanders as a frontrunner, voters produced a deep, seismic expression of discomfort with the candidate and his campaign. 1/ I mean, Biden’s nice and all, but he had a teensy campaign, no ground game... he was just THERE. And voters flocked to him.

(Me, I wish they’d flocked to Warren. But whatevs.)

Point is, going forward, there is only one important question: 3/

I just spent some time listening to the entire Trump/Parnas dinner. You’re welcome!

I’ve got some thoughts. There’s SO much more than Parnas here. Listen:

I’m going to start by saying a nice thing or two about Trump. Yup. I am. THREAD... He’s way less dumb and deranged than many of us think. I’d say “...than we paint him as,” but truly, he does the bulk of that painting for himself. Demagogues gonna demagogue.

BRET BAIER: What’s important here is to look at how the Democrats’ narrative has changed in 24 hour. Yesterday it was all about Trump fucking a dead man. Now they’ve shifted to the murder, which as far as I know is still not a crime. (1/x) BARR: We examined the whistleblower’s complaint about the murder and subsequent sexual encounter, and we found nothing here that indicates a violation of campaign finance law.

Ohmygod. Arguing with a conservative can be like having sex with someone who is really bad at sex. Everything is a clumsy and halfhearted bridge between the one or two things they actually know how to do. (1/x) I mean, what’s the point of carefully constructing an argument when you know that all they’re looking for is a pathway to shouting “Venezuela!” or “Benghazi!” or “Eventually you run out of other people’s money!”

Okay, this is kinda hilarious. But it’s not going to remain hilarious. Anti-vaxxers, let me tell you where this is going... A kid is going to die from measles. Probably a baby. It might not be an anti-vaxxer’s baby. It may well be one of your neighbors.

Because one of the reasons to vaccinate is to protect those who are too young to be vaccinated. If there’s no measles “going around,” they’re safe.

This thread is a must-read. Though it’ll be unsurprising to anyone who lived near NYC in the 80’s and 90’s.

Quick addendum: Several years ago, I worked as a creative consultant for “The Apprentice.” (1/a few) I have no startling revelations to reveal. It was 2005, I’d just moved to LA, I was broke, and the job presented itself.

[Wait - a friend I’m writing with just arrived. I’ll finish this later. Stay tuned!] (2/ a couple more, I promise!)

I’m kinda enjoying that Republican political discourse has now literally been reduced to pointing out various places where walls are a good idea.

“Hm, you weren’t so against walls when you built one around your BATHROOM!!” “I guess those walls at your bank are great for keeping your MONEY safe, but not for keeping our COUNTRY safe!!”

I jammed with a bunch of guys from my neighborhood until very, very late last night. Some observations:

If there were clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, I would almost definitely not be able to tell the difference. (1/x) “Boogie on Reggae Woman” contains a whole lot of boogie and like 0% reggae.

Also, were she in fact a “reggae woman,” it seems somewhat unlikely that her dancing would be too fast.

Not to be sightist, but I think Stevie Wonder may have misidentified said woman.

I’ve got a few minutes, so I’m gonna elaborate. But because I’ve written about this a few times already, I’m gonna try something different.

Let me tell you a story... I never met my Uncle Arnie, but he was a legendary comedy writer who married my mom’s sister back in 50s (he wasn’t a legend at that point).

He wrote for Jackie Gleason (my aunt scored a small but memorable role on “The Honeymooners!”), Phil Silvers, and then he moved to LA.

I got this.

Once upon a time there was a great country called “America.” It was great. Really terrific. It had the best people. The best freedom, really top-quality stuff. Everyone was winning all the time. But the country was too good. Too nice. Too trusting. Eventually a bunch of bad, angry people - a bunch of jealous losers, greedy losers - made their move, and they created The Swamp.

It’s late. I’m awake. Let me tell you a story.

See, in 2011, there was a candidate for president, a congresswoman named Michele Bachmann. Conservatives loved her, because she loved Freedom.

One of her signature issues was light bulbs. No, really. (1/x) It sounds weird, I know, but Ms. Bachmann was frothing-at-the-mouth angry about a 2007 law that required light bulbs to be more efficient by 2012.

I promise this will get (mildly) interesting.

I loathe this “Baby It’s Cold Outside” debate. And song parody, of course, is one of the lowest forms of comedy.

Still... um.... (1/x) I really don’t hate - Baby it's cold outside
But it’s just too late – for baby it's cold outside
This argument’s been (it’s really fun to sing)
So very trite (the counterpoint is hard to get right)

Please don’t @ her, but if you read the thread below, you’ll see that in a quick Twitter exchange, I watched this woman call me a dick, called my sister’s well-meaning joke “shitty...” (1/2 or 3) ...and then, amid an angry flurry of arrant condescension, revealed that she has a tendency to get into internet spats AND become estranged from family members.

Shocking!

No, srsly, I do see her side:

Hey @Uber_Support and @Uber - I left an iPad in a car this afternoon.

Um... help?

I mean, I followed all the steps, but have yet to connect with my driver or any other humans.

You guys have any humans lying around? See, there was a step to contact my driver. Did that.

Another step to let y’all know I couldn’t reach her. Which got me into a support chat!

But-at the moment, that’s an open chat with just one participant... me. And I’m afraid I have no further information for me at this time!

Wow, Brit. Let’s look at this thread.

-“The organized left...” Ok, we’re starting with that. Demonizing reactions from the left. They’re not just reactions... they’re a cynical product of “the organized left!” Horrors! (1/x) - “is lying.” So now, anything negative said is a lie, because it’s all part of the aforementioned “organized left.” Whereas to me, most of the reaction was opinion, not facts. Certainly not lies.

We’re four words in, and already two rhetorical atrocities. Can we not do better?

Just a quick logic exercise:

IF Donald J. Trump has committed multiple crimes, including money laundering, tax fraud, obstruction of justice, and even collusion with a foreign power,

THEN it is almost certain that investigators know all about that shit by now. (1/x) And IF the investigators know all about that shit by now,

THEN it’s a certainty that their communications about Trump are expressed in the way you’d communicate about any perp. Things like “We gotta stop this guy.”
