I have #thoughts to share for ppl who are on hiring committees for Indigenous Studies or Pacific Studies academic positions - my perspective here comes from my own connection with, and commitments to, both fields. (fwiw/ fyi they are *not* the same field) Okay so there are quite a few positions being advertised in Insig Studies AND in Pacific Studies which is GREAT and exciting. Obvs. How many ppl have struggled for these positions over the years. Woohoo.

exaaaactly. no māori lit course based at an english dept… no dedicated māori lit specialists based at an english dept… but yep let’s freak out abt shakespeare. in most things i will argue against zero-sum games, because whataboutism can be distracting, but funding is a case of priorities and money going somewhere doesn’t go somewhere else.

I really enjoyed reading this article abt white scholars who represent themselves as something else. I think this is a conversation we dont often have in NZ academia - but this is something we need to think carefully abt as we extend calls for more Māori and Pacific academics Those calls are important and I will make them until I take my last breath. However, we need to be realistic that some ppl respond in unethical ways to what they see as opportunities. What ethics or tikanga do we want to underpin the conversations abt this in Aotearoa?
