As a @UWSurgery faculty, I have strong feelings about this tweet.
1) Our @uwgensurgres residents are the absolute best and brightest (incoming, current, and alumni) and I am extraordinarily proud of each and every one of them 2) There is no excellence without diversity. For too long medicine and surgery have been homogenous, excluding women and people of color which harms both our profession and our patients

We did our first virtual interviews for our @UWSurgery Advanced GI MIS Bariatric Program today. Here are a few lessons learned:
1) Applicants were very grateful that we made the unilateral decision to move to virtual interviews. If we had made the virtual interview an option, they would have felt obligated to come in person no matter the circumstances.

Our paper on Conflict of Interest (COI) in invited talks at a surgical meeting was just published in @SurgEndosc - This thread is a quick Twitter summary rdcu.be/bOv1D@AlexLoisMD@saurabh_khand@Chenbariatrics1@pugel @OhJinsol
There is a lot of great evidence that COI is frequently underreported, with almost every study showing >25% unreported or underreported COI. For example, Olavarria et al showed that of 100 papers in hernia surgery 27% of authors underreported COI. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28167228
